We have a shelf like @josina: in our dining area for all the babies toys. Some are on top as well and usually organized. In my jig guys play area downstairs I have his toys sorted in clear bins with lids. Big toys are out but have a spot to be put away to.

I wish I had your closet space to put everything away in. Space is a reason we haven’t got many bigger toys.

I think most of those toys would fit in a kallax (or any 13 in cube shelf, just make sure it's not 11 in). I honestly would only have some of them out (a few sets of things and a few puzzles/games) and the rest in the closet or in a tote. That kind of closet space is amazing for toy rotation and actually being able to see everything!

I've been slowly getting rid of big toys (ride on toys, etc) because we had no where to store them and my youngest is now 3.

I agree with the others about storing some of the smaller toys out in the play space to free up room in the closet. We have a Kallax unit from IKEA. We have bins in half the cubes, and the other half are open for some slightly larger toys. I’m jealous of your closet space though, and would definitely store large toys that way if I could!

We have two of these that are horizontal against the wall behind our couch...

I have a few 13" boxes to hold smaller toys, some of the bigger toys fit in the cubes, and the rest go on top. Because it's behind our couch, it's semi-hidden, but I'd use a closet if we had one!

@SweetiePie: I think it would be challenging to find a unit to hold the bulky ones for sure. In our old house we used an ikea bookshelf on it's side with plastic target bins in it. (similar to this one: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90428446/)

In our current house, we have a built in closet that holds the bins and have surrendered to having bulkier toys out the majority of the time - and stashing them into the closet if for some reason we need the house to look super neat.

@psw27: that’s what I was thinking but was hoping someone could point to a specific one. They all seem kinda small (the ones I see).

I think I might just tell DH I can’t find anything that works and we’ll revisit it once it becomes an issue.

Could you find a shelving unit you like that could hold the smaller items out in the open (maybe even with doors if you want to hide the toys completely) and then that would free up some of the upper shelves for adult items?

Game closet, still a work in progress as I optimize.

We moved into a new house 2 weeks ago and have pretty much everything unpacked and put away.
We finally have a basement/rec room for the kids. We have one closet dedicated to games, puzzles, crafts/coloring, and the bottom shelf has baby toys so he can easily grab them.

We have another closet under the stairs that I’ve been keeping the bigger/bulkier toys in. Attached a pic so you can see what I mean. Mostly big boy toys like Imaginext Batcave, hot wheels garage, little people house, etc.

DH thinks we are wasting good storage space for other things we have (as adults). He wants me to find an affordable shelf or other unit that can store these bigger items. I personally think the closet is fine but I want to make him feel like he has a voice and I’m not just dismissing him.

What do you do with these bigger toys? I guess I could leave them out but I really hate clutter and like that the play area of the basement is pretty open at least on one side. I don’t want to line every single wall we have with toys. I like order and for everything to have a place or a way to sort of hide it. Getting harder as my almost 5yo gets bigger and so do his toys!

Or is that just what everyone does, keeps them all out???
