Just wanted to update, in case others come back to this, that I heard back from my LC. Here's what she said:

"The best resource for this information is http://www.infantrisk.com
This is a group out of Texas Tech University under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Hale. He is a pharmocologist who researches the effects of medication on breastmilk. He is the author of Medications and Mothers' Milk. This is a free resource. You can call and speak with one of his assistants about your situation and they will give you evidence based information. Have the names of the meds and dosages when you call. I would trust their advice above all others."

@JoJoGirl: I agree with other Bees that you should talk to the anesthesiologist to see if you have options. I had a D&C in July and was able to get "walking anesthia" - I don't remember anything from the procedure, but I was able to BF as soon as I got home. It was also *much* better for me - my recovery was much faster and easier than the times I have had to have general anesthia.

@JoJoGirl: oh and in regards to your actual question, I'd probably do all BM from the freezer. If LO has never had formula before I wouldn't want to worry that day about her response!

@scg00387: @kiddosc: Hmm okay this is good to know. I just emailed my midwives and LC to ask them too. I have a pre-op appt in a few days so may check with him again about other options. Thanks!

@JoJoGirl: a second about the anesthesia info... I'm not a doctor but my LC, surgeon, and OB all let me nurse immediately after surgery :)

Talk to your anesthesiologist, I think there are types of anesthesia he can use so that you won't have to pump and dump. I remember reading about other bees that have been in this situation and thought they would have to dump but then didn't have to. Otherwise I say use the stash and then add in formula later as necessary.

@Silva: Ah that's an interesting compromise :)

I should add that it's actually only going to be around 12 hrs of P&D... the surgery starts at 7:30am and LO goes to sleep at 7:30pm, so it'll likely only be while she's awake during the course of that day.

@Revel: Yes, afterward I plan to go back to nursing her when we're together (weekends) and pumping when she's at daycare. But I think what you said is part of my problem - the security blanket of my stash is so hard to let go of :(

Hmmmmm.. interesting link from Kellymom! I'll ask my LC too!

If I understand correctly, you plan to keep pumping still and BFing when together, even when the freezer stash runs out? If that's the case I would use your stash during the surgery and just add in formula if and when it becomes necessary. If seems like LO would still be getting BM from you regardless in that scenario?

Also, it doesn't sound like you're looking for info about the pumping and dumping and the anesthesia, but there is some info on kellymom that suggests you don't need to pump and dump - might be worth a look if you wanted to raise that with your OB.

http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/illness-surgery/mom-surgery/

Good luck with surgery and navigating this issue! I'm starting to dig into my freezer stash and it's tough losing that security blanket, as I call it....

My 8 month old is still EBF + solids (ie no formula supplementation since she was 2 weeks old).

In a couple of weeks I am having surgery that requires general anesthesia, and I've been told by both my surgeon and my OB to pump & dump for 24 hours afterward.

Right now I pump around 5oz/day in deficit of what LO drinks at daycare. I try to make up for it by pumping on evenings and weekends, so can often only use around 5 oz/week of my freezer stash. I have maybe 40 oz left in the freezer.

SOOOo here is my question: I think the idea is less BM for longer is considered "healthier" than 100% BM for shorter, yes? So how would you deal with that day or so? Formula for 24 hrs and leave the stash so I can give BM as long as possible in weeks? Or use potentially 75% of my stash in that one day and start daily supplementing with formula likely in the next few weeks when the stash runs out?
