@Mrs. Pen: Yes, you can stream Hulu and Netflix with both apple TV and the amazon firestick, although I admit I haven't actually tried it with the firestick (we had the apple TV first, so we just got used to using that one). For the amazon one, you need to download the Hulu and Netflix apps before you can use them. On apple TV, they just sort of show up automatically. I find the apple TV easier and more intuitive to use, so we use that for everything except amazon prime videos and stuff that we have bought on amazon.

We have a chromecast on every TV and just stream from our phones. It's easy and it was the cheapest option for us. I think the chromecasts are $40 (Canadian, probably cheaper in the US) and they sometimes have deals on them. We got one for half off, and a two others that came with a bonus of $10 to the google play store. (We have a lot of TVs in the house...)

Before we had the chromecast I used my playstation 3 to stream and it worked fine, but I didn't want to wear out the playstation by watching TV with it all the time.

We also have a smart TV which works well too.

We stream through a Roku and have no complaints. We've also used Apple TV in the past and had no complaints about that either.

We used to stream straight through our Blu-Ray player, which I would advise against. We had a lot of issues with it (and had 2 different Blu-Ray machines, so not a single-machine-issue).

You can stream Netflix and Hulu on Apple TV.
I'm pretty sure you need cable channel access to get full HGTV even if you have the app. If it is free please Let me know.

@catlady: can you highlight the differences between fire stick and Apple TV? Can you stream Netflix and Hulu with both?

@birdofafeather: omg fire stick has hgtv app?! Without needing a tv subscription? We don't have cable/satellite/etc and I love hgtv but never watch it unless it's on Netflix!

We've had a Fire TV stick for almost a year and we love it. We bought it during the Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals - not sure which one.

The only suggestion I have is to hide the tiny remote. DD lost ours in her toy box for several weeks (luckily there is a phone app as well).

We have a fire stick (so that we can use our Amazon prime streaming) and an apple TV (which we would never have bought but it was a gift and we actually use it alot). On the Apple TV, we always have Hulu and I also buy Netflix and HBO Now on occasional months when there is something new we want to watch (I have no issue cancelling and re-starting those subscriptions).

@Jess1483: i had no complaints with the roku either, except it randomly started freezing up and we had to reset it every now and again. we got the fire stick on a whim a year before and never gifted it like we planned, so DH took it out to bring to work (firefighter). he liked it and set it up at home a few times and i liked it. what pushed me over the edge was the HGTV app. :P i missed that with not having regular tv!

just a cursory view, but it seems like there are more apps (channels) available on the firestick? we also have the distinct advantage of using my parents cable login, so i know that opens up a lot for us that way too!

@MaryM: if you're an amazon user, the firestick is very intuitive for your collection of music and movies. we don't use itunes much, so we didn't consider an apple tv even though every other computer/phone/tablet we own is apple! i would recommend the firestick with the voice remote because alexa is pretty great!

We had the Apple TV, which worked great until it broke on us. DH bought an Amazon Fire Stick when it first came out, and we switched after the Apple TV broke. It has been working well for us for the last year or so. Affordable and reliable!
