@anbanan15: @betsyboop: agree with anbanan15. being able to understand is huge. i know soooo many late talkers (no words at 18 months+). but they could understand what people were saying and of course now they're all caught up!

@betsyboop: My friends LO just had an evaluation for EI recently. She basically had no words at 15 months, but understood a lot and since she understood so much she barely quilified for EI. Being able to understan is a huge part of it! Alot can happen in the next 6 weeks and if your LO does have an evaluation view it as a good thing because you will be getting some answers and no longer have to worry.

@betsyboop: Good! I wanted to add that lots of kids who need a little extra boost in speech catch up and then are fine. So they continue to reach future milestones without any extra support. Good luck!

@MamaCate: So helpful, thank you!

@artbee: I agree, they definitely do things in their own time. My LO CAN stand while holding onto things but for the last few weeks, she's refused to do it. This little girl has such a mind of her own, I always tell DH we have a sassy one on our hands!

@betsyboop: I think understanding is just as important (at least that's what i'm telling myself). Last week i would go "up up, down down" and she would squat up and down. This week? Pshh, just ignores me. Some babies are just talkers and others are quiet and like to take everything in. Our babies are just quiet, but it doesn't mean anything is wrong! :)

@Freckles: Thank you, I'm really trying not to stress. I failed to mention this at the appointment today, but my LO also understands a LOT of what I say to her so that makes me feel better. It's surprising how much our LO's pick up!

My lo was late on most of her milestones. Speech is the one that she was actually on time with. But clapping, waving, crawling, cruising, walking, etc. Evert time the nurse asks "does your lo do this? " I have to say no. For walking they said if she didn't walk by a certain time she'd have to see a specialist, so of course I freaked out. And she actually didn't walk by that time..... but I just felt like she was physically able but just not ready so we waited longer. Sure enough, at 17 months she started walking. Sometimes they just like to do things on their own time.

I work with young children and minor speech delays are quite common. Earky intervention can be amazing at helping kids catch up,.and if there is a problem, it is easier to catch it early so there is less ground to make up. In addition, any evaluator will understand that there is a range of "normal'" development and take that into account.

Idont know if any of that helps but good luck staying calm until your follow up!

Aww, don't stress out! I know how you feel. I worried a lot because my LO is almost 11 months and doesn't string consonants together and only says "mama/umma". But i know she understands what i say to her (sometimes, ha!) so i am holding off until her 12 month appointment to worry.

Big hug!

@Mrs. Jacks: I'm not THAT worried because she is saying mama (though not too frequently), but I think the fact that our doctor was mildly concerned freaked me out.

She hasn't had her hearing checked but I'm sensing that's not the issue because when we're in her nursery with the door closed and DH is doing something outside the room, she'll turn her head to see where the noise is coming from.

Sorry this is stressing you out. Hopefully everything is fine. I guess if she is saying mama, I wouldn't be that worried personally.

Has she had her hearing checked? Sometimes that can contribute.

@betsyboop: This is a great DVD that focuses on helping you learn how to teach your LO to talk. I learned so so much... I highly recommend it!

@Happygal: Thanks so much. I have 100% faith that if my LO does have a speech issue, we will be able to appropriately address it with the help of speech pathologists! I will keep you updated, fingers crossed it will be a non-event!

@brownie: Thanks, deep down I feel that she will babble on her own and that she is fine (knock on wood), but hearing about your son is reassuring. And I'm glad you're not worried anymore!

@BetsyBoop: I wish I had some knowledgeable speech pathology wisdom to share with you! I have worked with elementary aged children needing speech services for different reasons, and they are so good at what they do. I can imagine that being stressful. I'm glad you have a doctor who is keeping track of it and encouraging you to see a specialist in a specific amount of time. A lot can happen development wise in those six weeks. Please keep us updated!

I've posted about this before, but my LO is 9 months and isn't babbling much yet. She can say ma, meh (for milk), and mama but she doesn't string many consonant sounds together.

She had her 9 month checkup today, and the doctor said that we should wait and see how her speech develops over the next 6 weeks. If we feel like things haven't improved, we may have to consider a speech/language evaluation. She doesn't expect that we will have to do this, but now I think I'll be stressing until then, just waiting for my LO to talk more. Sigh.

Sorry for the vent, I'm just worried. : (
