I love packing cubes too. Each person gets their own so they can be parsed out to different rooms. DH and I have a packing folder too. It helps DH a lot since he is incapable of folding unassisted.

We're in the car on the way to the airport so I'm a lot calmer. I always feel better once we're on our way. This is when DH gets his vacation anxiety though. He's super frustrated with traffic and is sure we'll miss our flight. I just wish I had remembered to have our 3yo pee before we left the house. Oops.

@periwinklebee: @looch: I just put packing cubes on my Amazon wish list. I can't believe I've never tried these before!

@looch: Packing cubes are seriously the best invention, ever!

I use smaller ones, so I can find everything as quickly as possible without sifting through stuff, and I'm more likely to notice that something is missing if like stuff is together. It would drive me insane to travel without them...

@looch: My husband made fun of my spreadsheets. Multiple tabs, color coded, etc. Until we had our first big trip with the baby. Now he's a believer! I am the queen of lists.

@Corduroy: I've come to terms with the fact that vacations with the LO are not vacations for me. The only "relaxing" PTO I get these days is when I'm at home sick while baby is at daycare. I just have to accept the suckiness, have low expectations, be super prepared, and "go with the flow" (ugh, I'm so bad at that). And when something goes right or we enjoy ourselves, I can be pleasantly surprised! Lol. Everyone keeps telling me it gets better. We'll see ... I hope you do get many many enjoyable moments on your trip. And that your job interview goes well!

The way I deal is to make detailed spreadsheets of the things I need to pack. Then I pack those things into packing cubes. Somehow, it's relaxing and distracting.

Kids went to sleep (finally), I got all packed, and I reviewed company info for the job interview. I'm feeling better about everything. If DS stays fever free tomorrow we may even have a good trip out.

@Corduroy: hugs! It sounds like you have a lot on your plate!! Packing for a trip with LO is stressful enough! And like your DH mine is usually wrapping up things at work before we leave and no help! ;) I hope that things go smoothly for you while traveling and that you can get a few quiet moments to prepare for your phone interview. :goodluck:

How do you psyche yourself up for "vacation"?

We're taking a 4 hour flight tomorrow to visit the in laws for a week. It's two days at their place, 3 days camping at a lake, then two more at their place. I feel like I have to pack all the things. DH is fully engrossed in some work project and no help.

I took today off to pack but LO2 got a fever, pink eye and return of his awful diaper rash so I spent a chunk of the day taking him to the doctor for the 3rd time in a week. He was diagnosed with asthma this week so I'm still learning his inhaler regime. Eye drops, butt paste, inhalers, oh my!

Adding to the craziness, I'm being laid off in fall so I'm in full job hunting mode. I've been sending out resumes since May and haven't heard anything. I predicted weeks ago that I'd get a call for an interview while camping out of state. Close, today I got a call to set up a phone interview with my top choice while I'm at the airport tomorrow. I put it off until the next day but now I'm worried I was right about missing in person interviews while on the trip. I wish I could say I was chill about interviewing but this is the job I want most and I'm not going to be chill.

Sorry for the vent but I'm stressed and bummed that flying with sick baby to camp with my ILs + interviewing is how I'm spending my PTO.

I know I'll feel better when the trip starts but everything seems so monumental at the moment.

I'm so tired from packing & anticipating travel (and spending $$ on this trip) that I'm fantasizing about hurling the kids at my ILs at the airport and hopping a flight alone somewhere tropical.

Ok, bedtime for LO, then back to packing/cleaning.
