Have you tried the built-in flex jeans from old navy? They are zip/button, but stretchy/soft and super cute.

We get these from Target: https://www.target.com/p/toddler-boys-pull-on-skinny-jeans-cat-jack-153-medium-wash/-/A-53406928?preselect=53368751#lnk=sametab

They're easy for him to pull up/on by himself and softer than regular jeans IMO.

I recently discovered Abercrombie Kids "Sweatpant" stretch jeans. They're amazing - so soft. They really do feel like sweatpants, but look like skinny jeans! They use this material for a few different cuts. Wait for a good sale - Abercrombie has sales often.

My 3 year old son is the same way. I found some at Target last year that were skinny jeans but that you can also pull up.
Cat and Jack brand.

I figured the hive would have some suggestions on what brands to try!

I am looking for stretchy jeans for my son, who will be four in November.

I like the skinny/stretch jegging type that I feel like they make for babies but not kids. The regular denim jeans at say, Gap, are uncomfortable, ill-fitting, stiff, etc. AND I dont want a zip and button fly yet.

He is in a true 4T right now, at 40 inches and 40 pounds.

TIA!!
