I've never dealt with Stride Rite customer service, but I've been generally 'meh' about their shoes. My kids are hard on shoes. And I would think that they would have come up with better designs to withstand toddlers!

@threeplusme: He's not supposed to wear sandals to daycare, which I think Keens qualify as :bummed: . Hence the mention of Natives, which are more like rubber sneakers with holes in them.

Kind of off topic but I would suggest keens instead of natives. I find the keens are excellent quality, washable and rugged.

@ShootingStar: Ugh, I would not be happy with their answer given these shoes aren't cheap! And please show me what a 2 year old can possibly be doing to ruin the shoes in 3 weeks. Mountain climbing?!

This doesn't really answer your question, but I've had this problem recently with two pairs of Stride Rites (not the Phibian). Thankfully I'd gotten them at a local store so they took them back, but the salesperson mentioned that the Owner had been unhappy with Stride Rite lately. Not sure what's going on with their quality.

@Foodnerd81: The store's actually just around the corner from where I work, but when I tried to buy them there originally they were out of DS's size. I think I just want a replacement, because overall the shoes fit our needs and the problem is only one shoe, so maybe it was just a weirdly manufactured one.

We have the same shoes and yea, if they're falling apart like that after 3 weeks, that's not OK, even with every day wear. I would go back to them and tell them they can examine all they want, but 3 weeks of wear should not be causing peeling of material off the shoe and keep arguing.

I mean, how much wear/tear can he cause in 3 weeks?! And I thought these shoes are supposed to be for rough play all day long for kids!

Btw, we have Natives and I'm VERY happy with them. DD will only wear them so we literally wear them all day everyday.

I would expect better than that. Can you go to a store directly? I'd probably try that first of it wasn't super inconvenient. Then of that doesn't work, send them back and buy the natives I guess.

Eta: or instead of natives get the cheap old navy or similar version. Then they can be a back up at school and you are only out like ten dollars. Once you hear back from stride rite you can decide on a more permanent solution.

@ShootingStar: I suck at this, because I'm lazy--but my mom, who is retired, always just calls back and talks to a different rep until she gets the answer she wants. She just visited, and I bought some formula to try for LO2, because my supply is dropping. Well, LO2 hated it and wouldn't take it, and I was out $25 (it's alimentum and it was the powder LO didn't like). I was like, oh well, that sucks--but my mom called customer care twice until she got a $25 voucher. I was like, on what basis? Well, after she called the first time and didn't get the answer she wanted, she googled and found out the powder has different ingredients than the liquid and is less sweet, so she called and complained about the same label but different ingredients, and THAT got her the voucher.

@Anagram: Yes, they're paying for the shipping, but it was a really bizarre email. They make it sound like they'll just send me a replacement, but only if we didn't cause the damage ourselves? Really strange, and really bad customer service, IMO.

Email: "We are sorry to hear you are not happy with our product. We warrant all of our products against manufacturing defects.

Items with excessive wear and tear, material breakdown from extended time and/or use, fit issues or improper care are not considered manufacturing defects. If we find a manufacturing defect, we will be more than happy to send you a replacement product. "

@ShootingStar: are they giving you a shipping label? I would assume that if you are sending them back, they are going to refund the money. Otherwise, what the heck? What an odd request if they expect you to send the shoe back and you get nothing out of the deal AND are out the pair of shoes.

Did you ask them to clarify what would happen after you send the shoes back?

Although it's a totally different company, when my breast pump started to act weird, Medela asked me to send it back--when I said then I won't have a pump at all, then they said, Oh no, we're sending you another one right now. So I told them I would wait till I got the new one, and then send the old one. But they also wanted it for quality control testing.

I'm curious what other people would do/expect in this situation. I bought DS some "Phibian" shoes from Stride Rite a few weeks ago. We've had them for 3 weeks now, so not for very long, but they have been worn almost every day in that time frame. I bought these specific shoes because they're rubbery and can be washed. He's newly potty trained and I figured if he has an accident they can just be rinsed out. His daycare also has a playground that I hate, because it's sand. So in normal sneakers the sand gets in them and never totally comes out. These shoes are pretty one piece with no extra sole, so you can just shake them out or rinse them if they're really bad. Overall, I've been pretty happy with how they're working out.

But the other day I noticed one of them is starting to fall apart around the edge. I'm not thrilled because they're so new, and they're Stride Rite, so I expected them to hold up. Also, I'm worried that the way they're falling apart will affect the washability of the shoe, which was really important to us.

I took a picture and sent it to their customer support saying I was disappointed in the quality of the shoe, given how new they are. They responded back and said they want me to send the shoes back and they'll determine if there was a manufacturing defect or if it was caused by excessive wear and tear. I feel like this is a pretty crappy solution. He has another pair of sneakers, but again they aren't washable and they're continuously full of sand. So I should wait around for probably weeks while they figure out whether 3 week old shoes have too much wear and tear? Or go out and buy some Natives instead (which I think function similarly) and hope that I get the money back on the Stride Rites? I told them I wasn't happy with their solution and asked them to suggest something else.

So what would you expect in this case?
