@Weagle: She does live there and I asked her. She said she wasn't sure, but thought it's used to tie around the baby's back. She said she would ask around.

@LindsayInNY: It is one continuous loop! Which is totally throwing me off. If it was cut, then I'd know for sure it is supposed to be tied. Maybe I'll just cut it and tie it myself like you said!

Is the string connected as one big loop?

Cut it evenly in the middle and use it to tie behind LO to keep in place!

Thank you Google: http://berriesandbears.wordpress.com/2010/10/07/ultimate-baby-bib-tutorial-line-up/

I'd say it goes round LO's back to stop the bib flicking up?!

Does your sister live there? I would ask her if it's common and what it's for.

@maybebaby: nope, not elastic. Just a regular string. Think I should cut it off? Seems like it could be a strangulation hazard somehow...

I don't know what it is actually for, but is it elastic? Maybe it is supposed to go behind the belly/around the back so it doesn't flip up?

My sister bought me a bib in Japan and sent it to me, but it has this weird loop string sewn on it. I don't think I'm supposed to cut it off, but I have no idea what it's for. Help?
