I boiled my cloth inserts with dawn to strip them. I never put the dawn in the washing machine.

Bleach bleach bleach. A 1/4 cup in a large load, wash as normal and rinse rinse rinse until you don't smell the bleach anymore. I started visiting with moms in a group on facebook and realized that I had believed too much hub bub about all the do's and don'ts of cloth diapering. We originally used Nellie's (supposedly a stupendous cloth detergent) and while it worked great for a while, eventually we got build up of ammonia and had to strip. The build up was SO bad that our diapers actually leaked (from the build up coming to the top) for another handful of washes. We now use the Nellie's as a prewash and use a free and clear detergent to wash them and haven't had any issues since.

Bleach. 1/3c in the wash instead of detergent... And lots of rinsing. Every diaper resource I asked said to stay far away from Dawn because it can break your washer.

@T.H.O.U.: Just with fitted diapers. I replaced some BG 4.0 inserts before LO2 was born so those are ok and LO 1 only wears those at night.

@autumnlove: Is the stink in the inserts or the diapers (I think you use pockets). If its just the inserts I boil

I have boiled them before and it works great but very time consuming. Lately I have been adding boiling hot water to my washes. Calgon has also been good for our hard water build up.

@Seattlemom: I have the same wash routine, minus the soak. I will try that (and maybe the tub) tonight. LO 2 is wearing disposables at night until I figure this out! :)

thanks everyone!

We only used Dawn in the tub and hand stripped but did all the final rinsing in the washer.

We use the FuzziBunz Laundry Detergent with our cloth diapers. I do a 30 minute soak with the soap every time I wash plus a extra rinse and that has helped a lot with the stinkies. So I do:
1) full wash cycle with cold water and nothing else
2) wash cycle with a 30 min soak with soap & hot water
3) an additional full cycle with only cold water to make sure everything is rinsed really well.

@birdofafeather: I tried it a few weeks ago and used one teaspoon and the suds came out before I even added the diapers! I don't want to deal with that mess again.

That didn't happen with the washer we had at our old apartment. :(

I didn't want to use it in my washer either so I stripped them with dawn in the bathtub. I filled with the hottest water then added a few pots of boiling water to that. Dumped the diapers in and washed them by hand. I rinsed each as much as I could before putting them in my washer for a bleach cycle. Then a couple extra rinse cycles. I didn't get any sudsy water in the washer so I think it worked. The diaper smell was gone as well.
