whoa, it is so awkward to pour a kettle of water into a front loader

@pastemoo: good call. Was wondering when to add the boiling water.
Looks like I'm going to be washing and rinsing all afternoon.

@mrs. bird: yeah, I'm thinking if the bleach and extra hot rinses doesn't work I'll maybe do the dawn part by hand and then just do a zillion extra rinses in the washer. :)

AFTER a regular wash (with detergent), I poured boiling water into my machine and then started the hot soak. Then I ran the wash cycle without detergent. Came out awesome.

A different time I used oxy clean (but I wasn't sure if I needed to strip them at that point or not).

@cvbee: obviously I have no idea what I'm talking about since I've never used a cloth diaper, lol, but what if you boiled them on the stove with a lil dawn & then rinsed them really well in the tub before washing them in the FL so it doesn't get much of the dawn in it? Would that work or no? I'd be so scared to wreck the washer! Not that you need to be, I'm just saying I would be :)

@cvbee: Haha, yeah, I've had to strip a couple times due to ammonia issues and that's what I did. I put a couple cups on vinegar in my first cold rinse to neutralize any odor and then do a bunch of hot washes. Our water gets stupidly hot but you can also boil water and add it to your machine to make the water as hot as possible.

@zippylef: K, it is decidedly so. I am a cautious person so maybe I will save the blue dawn for my dishes and try the hot-hot-hot first. I am also overdue for our monthly bleaching (as per Bum Genius instructions, and most of my stash is BG) so that might help too. I even read to boil some hot water to add to make it even hotter. Might do that. Sounds less dangerous than the dawn!

Honestly, you don't need the dawn. Just do 7-8 HOT, HOT washes and you're fine.

@mrs. bird: We also have a FL and washing diaps has never been a problem. At 10m I've never had to strip either, but I also don't use creams without a paper liner.

@Mrs. Stroller: I'm so glad you mentioned the fl! We want to cloth diaper our someday baby but we have a front loader. I've heard they aren't ideal for cleaning cloth diapers, but I didn't know you could trash the machine with dawn! Scary!

From what I'm reading it says just a teaspoon of the blue dawn for front loaders.

I've stripped my diapers before when they were repelling after using cream that wasn't suitable for CDs. I put a load of clean diapers in the machine with 1 Tablespoon of Dawn and did a hot wash. Then I followed with 3 hot washes without any soap. It worked for us....

Good luck! ETA: I have a top loading machine!

Do you have an FL machine? A girlfriend of mine just ruined her washing machine with Dawn!

I started doing a soak with Rockin Green Hard Rock detergent and a cup full of BacOut in warm water. It seem to be getting them good and clean.

Good luck!

It's time.

May be because I've been using them for 4 months.
Or perhaps it's because I used my Mom's laundry machine this weekend and she uses fabric softener and bounty-bar in the dryer (which I removed, but I think there is probably some buildup in there).
Or possibly the 'cloth diaper safe' bum salve I've been using is't quite as safe as I thought.

But it is time for me to strip my diapers and I'm so nervous!

I've been getting a bit more pee leaks than normal and yesterday when I opened a non-poo diaper, there were a few beads of pee on the inside of the diaper, which hadn't gone through to the pocket, so that's when I knew I had a build-up issue.

Anyways, I have blue dawn and I am still not sure if I might just try bleach and hot-hot-hot rinses or if I'll use the blue dawn. Like everything else in my life, I won't feel ready to do it until I've googled the heck out of it and gotten some moral support from HB!
