We went with a splurge and bought the UppaBaby Cruz. It is a smaller version of the UBV and has worked perfectly for us. You can purchase the bassinet now but we used it from week 1 with the infant insert and the seat reclined. It is not overwhelmingly large and is a dream to push. At 13mo old he still really likes to ride in it and it still fits him perfectly!

Couldn't live without my UBV. Now I am think about also getting the UppaBaby G-Luxe because when LO goes to daycare, we need to use an umbrella stroller. I say if you find what you want, splurge. My stroller gets so much use, it was worth investing in.

@Corduroy: the maclaren would have worked, but charlie napped A LOT in his stroller. And the City Mini has a great full recline which might be really helpful for some kids. Charlie actually naps great in the Maclaren though.

you really have to wait and see what your needs are. i hated the umbrella stroller because we have really bumpy brooklyn sidewalks. the handling on the city mini is so much better. but

once kids start walking, they don't even want to be in the stroller! then when they're 3ish they start wanting to sit in the stroller again.

if you're on a budget, the easiest thing for you to do is buy used and sell used for the same price. that's what we did!

@regberadaisy: I saw you post about the Bumbleride Flite on another thread. I'm interested but I haven't been able to find one to try out and I'm hesitant to buy without trying.

Since the B-Agile is around $190 I was having trouble with the thought of spending more to get a smaller stroller. The Flite probably has everything we need though.

We are in the splurge camp. That said, I don't have a car. We go EVERYWHERE with our UBV. I don't know what I'd do without it. We have a chameleon hand me down at my moms house and despite it being a splurge stroller I hate it -it's not my UBV!
I think you need to look at how you live and what your needs are. If I used a car all the time an umbrella stroller would probably do.

Do your research.

There are plenty of great strollers out there that don't cost $300+. Our main stroller is a Bumbleride Flite and it was just under $200. We got a First Year Ignite for the ILs because they'll be watching LO. I think that is just under $100 but I got it on NBD for $34! You can def tell the Bumbleride is better made than the Ignite and it's more padded etc.

I belong to a few FB resale groups locally and had I known about them earlier I totally would have bought a used stroller! And personally I do not see the point of owning more than one stroller yourself. Unless it's going from one to 2 kids or for ILs as childcare.

To be honest, I'm one of the few that is not a fan of the City Mini and similar higher end strollers. They are just too big, heavy, and I'm too cheap to spend very much on a stroller. My nephews use one, and as mentioned above, there is a considerably obstructed view, they had a hard time seeing out when I was pushing them around the zoo.

Like @Mrs. Pen: I went with the Jeep Liberty stroller, I think we got it for $175, which was plenty expensive for us. We use it a lot for hiking and off road walks, it has a very smooth ride. I'm planning to use one of those "skateboard" attachments for C when #2 arrives (I've looked into it and there are a few that will fit) It is still pretty big, so for traveling and places with less space we got the Kolcraft Contours stroller for $50. It is a little bigger than an umbrella stroller, but light and small, and quite sturdy.

@Mrs. Bee: interesting points about the peripheral vision and ease of getting in and out of the stroller. I need to imagine LO using the stroller as a kid, not just a baby.

@LovelyPlum: Total score!

Tbh, I didnt leave for too many excursions that required a stroller in those early days. She was so little, and HATED the bassinet on the ubv, so I wore her. I put her in the regular UBV seat at around 3 months and I could have done it sooner- she loved it! So as attractive as the bassinet option was to me when stroller shopping (aesthetically- it's soooo cute!), we didnt get a lot of use out of the bassinet, and were too overwhelmed with newbornhood to try very hard. I was initialky disappointed, as the bassinet drew me to the ubv, but it drives like a dream- H sleeps in it like it's the Four Seasons- and I've come to appreciate so many genius things about it that I dont even really think/consider the bassinet. For #2, if our wits are together enough to all get out together in the first couple of months, we'll just wear #2 until 2 or 2.5 months old. Those nb days are just bonkers and they FLY so I wouldnt worry about not being able to make it a double with the bassinet. That is such a short time period. It's worth the $ for so many other reasons:)

@PrincessBaby: I also just found this: http://uppababy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/vista_accessories_RumbleSeat_021.jpg

So, the rumble seat works with the infant car seat, too. Good to know!

@Mrs. Bee: Oh, that's really interesting. I never thought about obstructing the view with the side flaps. That's also a really good point about just having one kid out separately...I never thought about it. So much to think about!

@LovelyPlum: they like the umbrella because it's easy to climb into, and the city mini obstructs peripheral vision somewhat.

and we need two strollers because we have to take just one kid out regularly (doctor's appt, and in the fall -- different school).

a generous relative offered to buy us a high end stroller, but i just went with the city mini. since we live in a ny apartment, space is a must and the umbrella stroller and our double stroller fold up really small. it really depends so much on your lifestyle.

just get a snap and go you'll know better what your needs are once baby comes. we used our snap and go for 6 months.

@PrincessBaby: Interesting. I don't think I realized that it came with a rumble seat. I'm assuming you can't use the bassinet with the rumble seat, though, which means you still have the potential issue of a newborn and a toddler needing to share a stroller. Though, I guess you could always wear the baby?

I realize this issue with a second baby is approximately a million years away. But, if I were going to drop that much on a stroller, I would want to know that it works long term!

Funny story, also: So I'm sitting here, reading reviews of strollers, and I mentioned something to DH about it, and I pretty much got the best response ever. He said that I have answers to questions he didn't even need asking, so I should just tell him what we will need, and we'll buy it. Score :)

@LovelyPlum: One of the reasons I wanted ubv is bc it converts into a double with the addition of the rumble seat! And there's also the option of the little board thingy to add on it for an older child to ride on while pushing. So it has the potential to handle 3 kids. All while driving super smooth and just being badass on the regular with sweet features!!!

@Mrs. Bee: Please, please do! One thing I would love to know: for people who get an expensive stroller, like the UBV, which I love, did they consider what they would do when/if they wanted to have another LO close in age to their first? What do you do with the oldest if you have a second? Who gets the stroller? Do you get a double one? This is something I'd love to consider before splurging on a luxury stroller for #1!

I'd also love to know about the baskets underneath-especially, do they sag?

FWIW, we live in the city and walk pretty much everywhere, so if it weren't for this issue, I'd totally go for a nice one we'd use all the time!

Out of curiosity, why didn't Charlie and Olive like the City Mini?

there are soooo many different variables to consider. i think i might have to turn this into a swarm post!

but you can get a city mini for a little over 200, and half that at least if buying it used. it is an excellent stroller. I would go for that and sell it if it didn't work out!

since our stroller is our car we've been through a number of them (bought used and sold). and i can tell you that both charlie and olive vastly prefer our umbrella stroller even though i prefer the handling of the city mini. so we sold our city mini and have a maclaren quest and a combi double stroller now.

We use ours a lot and whilst LO wasn't a big fan of the old pram, she loves this new one and is happy to sit in it for ages - she'll even go down for the night in it when we're out (we move her to her cot when we get home, but the point is that we can stay out later because she'll happily sleep in it!)

We now have the newest version of the Britax B-Ready (it's called the Steelcraft Strider Compact in Australia) but I'm not sure that model is out yet in the US as Australia gets all their new products first for a test market before they're released in the US and elsewhere. We were able to justify our purchase in that it is second seat compatible so it will serve more than one purpose. If you're looking at having another baby somewhere down the road, it might be easier to go with something like that to justify it more in your mind.

Depends, how often do you see yourself using it? I prefer to wear my baby and don't need one for jogging or anything because that doesn't happen, lol. So for us a basic one fits our needs.

My mom taught me to always buy the nicest I could afford. I bought a used ub vista off craigslist and its one of my best baby purchases.
