I knew the recommendations were now for under a year, but we still haven't introduced nuts to A, who is almost 11 months. I know we should, but it makes me nervous. And we have absolutely NO family history of peanut allergies.

Started giving him PB at around 7 months, per the NYTimes article and checking with our pediatrician. We kepy it up and now at almost 2.5 he loves PB and isn't allergic (which is great bc there was a period in the fall when he would't eat any other protein!)

We stirred peanut butter into warm oatmeal when our kids were babies. It just melts in and is delicious, especially with a little dab of coconut oil if you have kids that need the calories and some cinnamon.

@lady baltimore: yep, definitely gave. Ew stuff in the morning before naps or anything so I could watch her for a few hours after. I had forgotten about that! At a mum group I went to people said that some go sit in the hospital parking lot when they give their kids peanuts for the first time.

My nephew had an egg and nut allergy just before one and at his allergy testing around 2.5 he was cleared of both! My brother has had an egg allergy since 1 though and it's still going at 15...

I have an anaphylactic allergy to peanuts and. tree nuts, discovered at about a year old at my first exposure. We didn't expose LO until she was almost 2, because I couldn't figure out a way to do it safely for me (I am highly touch sensitive, and LO is very cuddly). Instead, we did allergy testing at 7 mos for LO, which showed no reaction. Turns out she HATES it anyway!

We gave her nut butters and Bamba pretty early - within a month of starting solids (at 6mos). The only consideration I gave to timing was to give it for the first time at breakfast, when her pediatrician's office down the street was open, instead of at dinner when we'd have to go to the ER/urgent care if there were a problem. :silly:

Lo 2 got peanuts at 6 months per the pediatricians recommendation.

No allergies for either.

My family has lots of developed food allergies and we got told off for not introducing him to peanut butter earlier by the allergist.

One way to give peanut butter is filling the middle of a cheerio with a tiny amount of peanut butter. Laborious process, but pretty clean overall.

My DH & BIL are both highly allergic, so I waited until my son was 8 months - I wanted a weekday where I was home with him so that I could see the reaction and have a choice of taking to the pediatrician, urgent care, or emergency room dependent on reaction. Luckily he has not had any reactions so far, but I've only done it about maybe once every two weeks bc it is SO messy and I can't do it when DH is around. The article recommends 3 times a week! yikes!

I had heard this from my friend whose older daughter is allergic. They introduced her younger daughter early, and make sure to give it every week or so-- they have to be regimented about when since they obviously can't give it to the baby when the allergic big sister is around!

We introduced both pretty early, 7 or 8 months? We were low risk since we have no food allergies on either side and have had no problems.

@T.H.O.U.: We had it at a friend's house and my son looooved it. But when i compared the nutrition content, it has more sugar and fat compared to goldfish crackers, however, considerably less in sodium.

It always seems ludicrous to me that doctors recommended waiting to introduce peanuts. Isn't that the way the human body develops protection, by being exposed to stuff and there for getting a chance to accimate to antigens?

@Pancakes: Oh, hearing that your DD1 outgrew it around 4.5 gives me hope! Logan's seems pretty severe, especially around his ankles and wrists and I just feel so bad for him. I hope both our 2 year olds outgrow their eczema soon!

@Adira: same here. 😕
Both DDs have/had eczema (DD1 has outgrown it, yay!). I introduced peanuts to DD1 around 12-13 months; she has no food allergies. Introduced peanuts to DD2 at 7 mos, and she reacted. We also found out after that she has a couple of other food allergies.

At 6 months my doctor basically began harassing me to introduce peanuts (he had already mentioned it at 4 months too). He did say keep giving it as well once you start. I think I tried it around 7 months and I rubbed peanut butter on her cheek first because someone had suggested it to see if there was any reaction. She isn't allergic, but doesn't like peanut butter mug at 14 months.

DD2 has a peanut allergy (and egg allergy and eczema). I wish I had read this before we introduced solids... we did give her peanut products (Bamba) at 6 months but because she was having bad reactions (not anaphylactic) to eggs, we stopped giving her peanut products. I wonder if it's too late.

DS2 was introduced to peanuts at around 7 months because of what DS1's new allergist told us. She explained that other cultures outside of the US don't have as high of food allergies due to the early introduction of allergens in their diets.

LO1 is allergic to eggs and tree nuts.

I know early introduction of peanuts has been the recommendation for a while now, but I haven't seen such a strong position before on when to introduce peanuts (particularly for high-risk infants):

http://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/05/well/eat/feed-your-kids-peanuts-early-and-often-new-guidelines-urge.html

I think we introduced peanuts pretty early, maybe around 7 months - we'll definitely keep this in mind for #2!
