There's little to no struggle to get the kids dressed if it happens right upon waking. If we don't change, they could end up wanting to live in their pajamas for the day. We pick out clothes the night before and they go right on in the morning. This is for M-F. We let them stay in jammies Sat and Sun until we have to go out.

@Bao: do you think any chance she has sensory issues with regular clothes? Just trying to think like I know some Los refuse to wear jeans and will only wear leggings. I mean pajama pants and a nightgown is very similar to leggings and a tunic! ;) they don't know what's an "actual" pajama classified item. Just buy regular clothes and put it in her pajama drawer. Lol

@bao: umm, awesome. what about letting her wear pajama tops OR bottoms every day, but making her wear real clothes for the other half? kinda like a compromise...haha...

@KayKay: haha!! That's why today she was in, ready for this? A fleece nightgown and zebra print pajama pants. She has character shirts I try and bribe her with and it doesn't work! When I do manage to get her in clothes then bring pajamas, say to my moms, to change into or I tell her I packed them for later she like laugh cries she's so happy...it's so odd lol

@Bao: could she help you pick out her clothes (like at the store)? there is one girl at LO1s school that wears an Elsa dress (not THE Elsa dress, but still...tulle skirt and all) to school at least 2x a week. I'm guessing her parents just gave up the battle, figuring it was better than pjs. Is there anything she loves that you could get her a character shirt/dress of?

also, i think any parent of a kid that age would only commiserate with you if they saw you out with her in PJs ;)

My friends son lives in pajamas. She has given up the battle. He has to wear clothes for parties and things like that, but knows he is allowed to get back into pjs when he gets home. Literally he runs upstairs to change the second he gets in the door! 😂

This is a very common issue with this age group!!!! Some days getting dressed is not a big deal. And some days even letting her pick or giving her ample time to get used to the idea is not enough. A lot of time telling her we're going out to do xyz (something she considers fun) is enough to get her out. She loves going to "school" so usually telling her we're going to be late is enough. Other time if it's not school I just let her go in pajamas if it's such a big battle. Who cares?!

I let DD choose between 2 too. Sometimes I make a 'game' out of it and take two tops and twirl it around and make it sound super exciting and put it behind my back and tell her to pick. She gets a kick out of it and always asks for the 'game'. Haha. Whatever works!

We had an epic meltdown over this a few days ago. Since then I have been letting her choose between two things I pick for her and that is helping. But it's only been a few days so who knows whether it will help long term.

Sometimes it's NBD at all to get him dressed, and sometimes he throws a fit about one thing or another, so I let him pick something else ("I don't want to wear that shirt" "Okay, what shirt do you want to wear?") Giving him some control over it helps us a lot.

I find that if we're consistent about getting DD dressed every day, even if we aren't going anywhere, the battles aren't as bad. If we have days when we let her hang out in pjs, getting her dressed for the next couple days is harder. I also let her pick her own outfits from her drawer most of the time, unless we're really pressed for time - this drives DH batty and if he's in charge, he will usually just choose something for her and she eventually gets over it. But I think it's important for her to be able to choose and I don't really care if her outfits don't match (and DH is practically colorblind so you can't really tell if she dressed herself or if he did it on any given day). But there are still mornings like today when I have to stuff her into her clothes like a sausage and feel like the meanest mom ever...

I agree with the others in offering choices as far as certain clothing pieces go, but that she must get dressed out of her pj's. If I know there is a particular outfit I want her to wear, I lay it out and tell her ahead of time that is what she is wearing, but she can change back to her choice of clothes at a later time..

Is there a particular character or friend that you could talk about to help her understand? Ex: DD is really into princesses so I could say something like the princesses always get dressed out of their pajamas and look nice for the day, blahblah.

I usually give DS a choice in his clothes with some parameters. I ask him if he wants a blue or green t-shirt and then if he wants pants or shorts - weather permitting that is. This works out well since he feels like he has control over the situation. Maybe you can give her a choice of two colors of leggings and tops?

We struggle with this too. Is there something that she likes to do in the morning that you can delay until after she gets dressed? FOr us, LO can't watch any shows until he gets dressed, eats breakfast, and brushes teeth. It helps a lot.

This was a daily struggle for us. DD1 would FLIP OUT every day because she didn't want to wear her uniform to school (thrashing, screaming, throwing things, hitting us...) and I dreaded it every day. It almost always ended in us forcing her out of her pj's and into her uniform.

Sometimes, if I gave her the option of what color shirt/pants to wear, it would help, but what mostly helped is talking to her about it before hand. ... And I would tell her (in a very fact-of-the-matter tone), "You have to put your uniform on. So, either you can change your clothes or I will do it for you, and you won't like it if I do it for you. The choice is up to you.". and I would always follow through with it. After a few times, she learned she didn't like it when I did it.

LO1 is almost 3.5 and if she could live in her pajamas she most certainly would. I don't mind when we are home but she can't wear pajamas to school, and I like her to at least get dressed when we go out and do things. The past few weeks it has been a HUGE battle to get her to put clothes on when we need to leave the house. She will cry and throw a fit and it takes a good 20 minutes to get her to agree to let me to put them on, sometimes I even have to force her, which is no fun. I've even tried sweatpants, but most of her outfits are leggings and comfy clothes anyway, she just wants pajamas! Today I attempted to get her dressed before running errands and she got upset so I said forget it, and let her wear her pajamas. Im sure that wasn't a smart move on my part but I am so sick of dealing with this battle.

I'm sure this isn't a very common issue with other LO's but hoping someone can chime in with some advice. What would you do? Keep battling with her to get dressed and hope it passes, let her wear pajamas, something else?
