@ShootingStar: I'm not sure. I've been going to MFM every 4 weeks and getting ultrasounds- my next one is next week. I'm curious to see if they'll have me go more often now.

@ShootingStar: sorry you're going through this. GD is a huge pain. I had a lot of issues with my last preganancy keeping things under control. My biggest issues were my fasting numbers in the morning. I was on Humulin injections at night before bed, but as I got more and more pregnant the amount of insulin I needed went WAY up. Have they adjusted your dosage?

The one other thing that really helped keep things under control was to walk for 20 minutes after I ate. It was pretty much impossible a lot of days at work, but on the days I could fit it in it really really helped keep my numbers down.

I also had horrible acid reflux and peanut butter was an issue for me too. I ate a lot of avocado b/c that didn't seem to bother me and it helped fill me up. My doctor recommended that if I was going to eat bread, to try the sprouted wheat bread. There is a brand called Alvarado Street and I think Trader Joes also sells one. I'm not sure why it doesn't affect your numbers as much as regular bread, I guess it might be because it is less processed.

I'll try to think of anything else helpful I did. I'm pregnant again, but not very far along and I am really not looking forward to dealing with this again. (It has been really bad, I've been inhaling ice cream and cookies and all kinds of crap now b/c I know I'm not going to be able to eat any of it soon!)

To look on the bright side, because I had to be so careful about what I ate I really didn't gain that much weight while I was pregnant so it all came off pretty easy post-baby.

@lilteacherbee: It was actually DH's idea. I have 2 - one stays in my purse so I always have it when I'm out, and one stays at home. I was having issues with it always being in the wrong place, so he suggested buying another one. My meter is $20 at CVS (Freestyle Lite). I would be really frustrated with your doctors too :(. Are they going to monitor you/the placenta? I have to go 2x/week starting at 34 weeks for NSTs. And I have a couple more ultrasounds to check on whether the placenta's holding up. My latest fear is that with my GD being so uncontrolled for weeks, that I've caused too much damage to the placenta.

@ShootingStar: I guess I could do that... i never actually thought if that! I was thinking about using another kind but realized that my insurance wouldn't pay for the crazy expensive test strips. Haha that makes sense though. It's just frustrating that the doctors dismiss everything without really listening to what I'm saying (kinda like the whole dating of this pregnancy...) ugh!

@lilteacherbee: Oh man, that's awful. Meters are pretty cheap (~$30), I would go out to CVS or Target and pick up another one of the same kind and start logging 4 times a day again. The calibration on yours must be off :(. I was really impressed with your numbers, too! Even when I totally controlled, they never let me reduce the amount of testing like they did for you.

@MaisyMay: I decided that tonight I'm going to add back in Metformin and show the doctor that it does help me. I believe the benefit far outweighs the risk at this point. I do like yogurt, maybe that would be a good option now that I need snacks with 30g of carbs.

@ShootingStar: As a diabetic who controlled it with diet and exercise pre-preg, having to go on metformin and insulin while pregnant was a shock. Talk with your doctor about staying on Metformin/adding it back in. A
lso, do you like yogurt? For me, a perfect snack was a go-gurt and a fiber bar. Also, cheesesticks were so helpful. Ask your nutritionist if you can have fruit earlier in the day. Mine didn't let me eat it until lunch, but if you can, 1/2 an apple with some peanut butter helps. If you like tortillas, try tortilla with meat and cheese, rolled up.
If you need more ideas, let me know! You are so so so close to being done!

I'm sorry lady :( I'm frustrated too, for different reasons. You know how awesome my numbers have been right? Well last weekend, I was bad (kinda on purpose too because I've never gotten a number above 120 after 2 hours or a fasting number above 85). I had pizza and breadsticks and my number was 118. I was like...no way. I was at my moms, so I checked with my grandmas meter and hers said 152! That's a big difference. I got my grandma and both DH to check theirs using the SAME blood for each meter. DH's with mine said 116 and with my grandmas said 219! My grandma (who has diabetes and had JUST eaten) said 279 with hers but 95 (???) with mine.

I spent the weekend freaking out that my numbers may have been off this whole time when I thought I was actually doing really well!! I used my MILs extra meter to compare with mine and mine was always 20-30 points lower with the SAME blood at the SAME time. The meter company wasnt very helpful- they are just sending me the control solution to test it with because my kit didn't come with any. Still haven't gotten that in the mail yet.

I called my doctor at MFM and she basically acted like I was an idiot and told me that different fingers even minutes apart can give different readings, and I'm like NO. I use the same blood for both and they are very different! It wouldn't concern me as much if I would have gotten a high number on mine at some point, but I never have :( I told her that I'm worried that my numbers have been way higher than what I've thought and she basically dismissed it as not even a possibility. I'm just eating like I have been since I was diagnosed and hoping everything is okay.

Just wanted to commiserate. GD is not hard most of the time, but sometimes it REALLY sucks :(

@Happygal: Yeah, I tested at 1 hour and got a 156, which freaked me out. Then I tested at 2 hours and got a 96. I'm supposed to test at 2, unless there's a need to do it early. I had a meeting right at the 2 hour mark and wanted to make sure I got a reading since I just upped my insulin last night.

Did you test at one hour? I read it can be good to do one hour, then two. Some people spike then drop. Not sure that applies to GD.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the support. I feel like having reflux is making this a lot more complicated because I hate eating too close in between meals and peanut butter really does a number on me.

And to make things more confusing, my 2 hour number after breakfast was 96 (unusually low for me). So IDK WTF is going on.

I'm sorry :( I was diagnosed at 11weeks with this last pregnancy so I understand.
I started with just diet changes and then went to pill medication and then went to insulin.
I honestly loved my insulin. It was the best thing for me. I took both fast acting and long lasting (N and R) in the morning, took another at dinner time and one more before bed. It was wonderful once we got my dosages correct.
Hopefully, they will get your dosages in the right place and you will feel better with it.
Hang in there.

I have GD, but I'm not insulin-controlled. However, my husband is insulin-dependent Type 1 diabetic, so I'm familiar with your medication and how difficult adhering to the diet can be. I'm so sorry you are going through this!

I have a hard time with the meal planning as well, because I'm just so tired at the end of the day and on weekends. Can you keep snacks at your desk and portion out lunches from weekend leftovers? What kind of diet do they have you following?

I know that the longer you are GD, the harder it is to control your numbers, but I hope that you and your doctor are able to come up with a plan that works for you and keeps you and baby healthy.

I'm sorry. Did you get to read what Yin wrote on my post about diabetes? I thought she had some good tips. Are there some bland types of snacks you could find to help keep things steady for you?

During my research about all things diabetes, I found a couple online forums that are very informative and seem to be a good source of support for people. Maybe one of those sites can be helpful to you as well.

Hugs to you--it sounds like a lot to handle.

I am really struggling with having GD lately :(. To the point where I had a complete breakdown last night. I'm currently 31w4d and was diagnosed back at 10 weeks.

For a long time I managed just fine by taking Metformin and eating reasonable meals. But at the beginning of the month I noticed my fasting numbers were no longer perfect and were creeping up over 90 and then up over 100 (should be under 90).

My endocrinologist convinced me that I should go on insulin and stop taking Metformin. She told me I would just need to take it at night, either an intermediate acting one to help with overnight numbers, or one at night that would give me 24 hour control. I was on Humulin N (intermediate acting), and in the 3 weeks since, I still have not gotten things under control. Last night I received a message from the Dr. advising me to keep lunch and dinner to <30g carbs and raise my snack carbs to 30g, and that I would need meal time insulin.

I just don't know how to keep up with this. It's so hard for me to plan meals, to eat things on time, to fit in snacks and to stay under 30g carbohydrates. And even then, I still fail - this morning my 1 hour numbers after 20g was 156 >:(. I have a job that can be crazy at times and I have awful acid reflux that makes me not want to eat between meals. I am so upset that I stopped taking Metformin, which in hindsight gave me really good control all day, except for fasting. The insulin just doesn't seem to be working, and I know that for my lifestyle, trying to adhere to this plan just isn't going to work.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for here. Maybe just a vent. Or someone with GD experience that went through something similar and figured it out?
