I used to just pump for a couple minutes - just enough to relieve the engorgement. But eventually your boobs get used to it! Xander now goes 8-9 hours between eating (at 6.5 months), and my boobs don't hurt in the morning anymore! :)

When LO first started sleeping longer stretches at night, I would pump the side she didn't feed on. But that made me have and oversupply and it exacerbated the situation and I HAD to pump otherwise it would be so uncomfortable or when I would feed LO,she would get frustrated because it was coming out too fast. Lately, I've been just massaging my breasts in the morning and expressing some either into the nursing pad (when I'm super lazy) or a towel/burp cloth that I keep by the bed. Since I stopped pumping as much, I'm less engorged but still have full breasts in the morning (esp the side she didn't feed on the previous feeding.)

I feel like if I'm going to get up to hand express (which I suck at) I may as well sit with my pump for ten minutes and actually get a whole bottle out of it. As for my body adjusting I am sure it will if this STTN thing becomes a regular thing (please oh please let it become a regular thing!). In the meantime I may practice hand expressing just enough to help me sleep.

@autumn865: and yes it is so annoying when I can finally sleep and these melons are keeping me up! I actually soaked my first nursing pad when she was still eating in the first side after she woke up. The other side couldn't wait any longer.

I hear ya! The irony of it all you finally get the opportunity to STTN but can't because you're so full and uncomfortable. When it happened to me I just hand expressed a little and worked through it until my supply adjusted :-/

Not sure if this was suggested but I pump on the front end of LOs long stretch of sleep, like an hour after she last nursed. Now I woh full time so I'll take every drop I can get, but might not be a bad way for you to build a small stash and offset the engorgement without having to wake up.

I'm not sure if anyone said it, but I would just hand express into the sink until I got a little relief. Much easier than pumping and dealing with all of that

Honestly if you're not going back to work I would say let your body self regulate. If you were going back to work it could be a good way to build a freezer stash but if you don't need it I would get the extra sleep!

This post just saved me! My 8 day old son already sleeps for giant stretches but he hasn't eaten as much in 24 hours and my boobs are killing me. Our pump won't be here until Wednesday so I hand expressed and it did help a lot!

@Foodnerd81: Since the engorgement was so uncomfortable it kept me up (I couldn't go back to sleep when they were so full!) I used to either hand express a little, or pump for a few minutes... just enough to relieve the engorgement.

my baby slept those hours for about 3 months (2 - 5 months) and i pumped almost every morning and built a huge stash! now he wakes once during the night and so i don't wake up full like that anymore but i need to replenish my stash so i am hoping he starts STTN soon.

but if you don't want to pump, you can suffer for a few days and your body will adjust.

oh and i think in all those morning of pumping did i ever get the sense that baby was still hungry when he woke so i gave a bit more in a bottle. Although i also typically pumped right after he had his morning nursing session so it was never usually an issue.

I would squeeze just a bit into a burp rag. I let my body just regulate itself. Even after almost 3 months of her sttn I still wake up with bowling balls unless I dream feed her before I go to bed but it's not as bad.

@Foodnerd81: I'm awake right now for this very reason and pumping. My LO isn't STTN yet but she does give me 6 hour stretches and only eats from one side during the night so I pump the other. I'm trying to build a stash and can get way more in the night or early morning. Plus my boobs just get uncomfy.

By the way remind me to never to come to your house since you like to have "someone" in the freezer ;)

I wouldn't pump, that just makes the problem worse because it's telling your body you need that milk. If you're trying to build a freezer stash though, that'd be a good time to do that :). If not, your body will adjust eventually. Yay for sttn!!!

C has started sleeping through the night every once in a while- YAY!! But if course on those nights I wake up completely full and uncomfortable since she doesn't usually do it and my body doesn't know what to expect. I'm afraid to get up and pump those mornings since I MWeber know when she will wake up.

How did you handle it as your LO started sleeping longer and longer stretches? Pump for a few minutes to relieve the fullness? Just lay there super full (what I did today)?

Also I am so very excited to be having this dilemma. Baby slept from 9:30 to 7!
