Your boobs will only get the message to stop producing if you stop pumping.

I hand expressed a little into the sink to take the edge off and my body regulated itself within 1-2 days.

Stop pumping. It'll adjust over the next week or so.

My son has been sleeping 7 hour stretches for the past week or so, and the first few days I woke up several times in pain. I had to pump a few ounces to relieve the pain and make sure he could latch. But it's been evening out -- I still am really full in the morning (and usually still pump a little for him to latch) but I don't wake up in pain overnight now. So if you don't need the stash, I'd just pump a little for relief/latching and see if it improves in a few more days. It's been working for me and I have an oversupply.

@debbiei8: I forgot about my hand pump!! That's a good idea!

It's nice getting the extra milk to store but I really don't need it. I had a decent freezer stash before STTN. I may try to just express enough to ease the discomfort and make it easier for LO to eat. Then maybe wean into no expression at all.

When LO started STTN around 8w I pumped every morning to build up a stash. Then I got sick of it and let it go for a few days. I was uncomfortable but it wasn't bad and my body adjusted. She went through periods of multiple night wakings and now at 8m always gets up around 5-6am for a quick feed and my body always adjusts fine.

If you don't want to have to keep pumping because you are uncomfortable then just tough it out. With A it took a lot longer to adjust, but now with E it's not as painful when I do go beyond a feeding.

When LO started sleeping 4 hour stretches I had this problem because he only takes 1 boob at a time. I asked my mom (a LC) if I should pump the side he doesn't eat on and she said if I did I would keep waking up uncomfortable. She said my boobs will adjust to make more during the day when he's actually eating it. I didn't pump and like 2 or 3 nights later my boobs didn't hurt after 4 hour stretches. During the week I do try to pump the side he doesn't eat on when we get up for the day, but I don't always do it.

He slept 6 hours one night this week and I woke up really full on both sides and hurting. I used my hand pump on the side he was eating on for a couple minutes so he wouldn't choke and I pumped the other side a few minutes for relief. It was nice not to have to drag out my electric pump at 4am.

If you don't have a hand pump it might be nice to get one for the weekend mornings so you don't have to get out of bed but you can have some relief!

You'll adjust. If you want to build up a stash, then pumping first thing like that is a great way to do it. If you'd rather just have your breasts adjust to the new normal, I would only express enough that you aren't in pain and LO can latch on, but not a full pump or empty or anything. If you keep pumping to empty your body will assume you need the milk.

C has been STTN on and off for a few weeks now, and when she does, I wake up very full but not in pain, and she's able to latch on no problem. The downside is usually the side I don't start on leaks and occasionally drips down on her while I'm side lying nursing on the first side! She doesn't seem to mind.

ETA: C was much older than your LO when she started sometimes STTN, so my supply was probably a little more regulated already. I guess it could take a little longer since he is still so young and your breasts are still adjusting?

How do you deal? I wake up with super full boobs every morning. If it's a work day I hand express as much as possible in the shower before T wakes up so I don't choke him when I go to feed him. If it's a weekend day I go pump before he wakes up. I get almost 8oz when I pump which is awesome for my freezer stash...but I really don't want to have to pump. Especially if STTN lasts. This morning I slept in some and had to leave my husband and baby in the bed to snuggle while I had to go hook myself up to a machine. I missed lazy Sunday baby snuggles!
I want my milk to adjust. I'm not sure what's right and wrong to do.

Any advice?
