Where do these kids come from?! I worked my a$$ off and used part-time work study money to buy books, and am still paying off loans for college. I did get grant money but I certainly never expected my parents to pay for my college. Same as @bluestriped bee, I will certainly contribute what I can but college is a perfect opportunity to teach the kid about responsibility and earning your way. Students under the age of 25 have their parents income considered for their eligibility for federal student loans. Whether the parent intends to contribute -- or even if they are willing to provide their tax information to the student so s/he can complete the FAFSA does very little to affect aid eligibility.</p> <p>I experienced this when I was in college -- my father was homeless for much of that time. I didn't know where he was, if he had income, or even if he was alive for much of that time. I had a lot of trouble qualifying for federal student aid because of the lack of information. Fortunately, the school I was attending was willing to take it into account and I got a fair amount of grant aid.
