@Mrs Green Grass: I agree, i think it just depends on the kid. I've had people tell me the reason LO has (had) nut allergies is because I ate so much when she was in the belly, others were shocked due to the fact that she did based on the amount of peanut butter I ate. The more I research the more I get confused ;)

@LuLu Mom: @Anagram: This definitely says nothing about how allergies are actually developed and based on what I've read, you can't do a whole lot to change whether or not your kids will have allergies, but I liked hearing a specific small thing that can potentially prevent some allergies....

There is a ton of conflicting info out there. Most of what I've read says introducing many of the high allergen foods earlier may actually be better. But it takes such a long time for the prevailing wisdom to change. I waiting until a little under 6 months for solids and added eggs pretty quickly and peanut butter around 10 months.

4 months old felt early for us too with solids. We tried them, but nothing consistent until 6 months old. It wasn't until after we weaned him at 8 months old did we do more solids.

@Sammyfab: @Foodnerd81: Right?! So small! M just turned 4 months and I can't even imagine beginning solids yet...she's still my baby! She also has a super strong gag reflex, so I don't see a spoon going over well just yet.

@Foodnerd81: @looch: Agree. I started to do some research when LO turned 4 months and it made my head spin. It's incredible how much disagreement there is on this subject. We're just going on our gut and common sense at this point, with a sprinkling of doctor recommendations in there.

@looch: This. It goes back and forth so much... I think as a parent you just have to follow your gut sometimes.

I find this whole subject of when to feed, what to feed, how to feed so fascinating. I think the medical community doesn't really know and I don't know if they'll ever know. There are so many differing opinions on the matter and it's also unfortunate that a lot of the world views food allergies as a western world created medical condition.

Umm...babies aren't even technically 4 months old at 17 weeks! I would think that it's more an issue of their little digestive systems not being able to handle solid foods rather than just an allergen issue. That's just my personal opinion though.

@LuLu Mom: Eh. My little sister is the only one in our family of 6 kids with serious food allergies (to nuts and shellfish) and she was ironically the only one EBF for a long time. No food allergies for either of my parents, either.

So I think in some cases, it's a crap shoot!

I find these studies interesting as a mother of an allergy ridden child (who was never introduced to her allergens before hand, we found out through a scratch test) I always wonder how she ended up with them!
