Great advice all :) And it sounds like there is a consensus here. I guess it is just hard to figure out the right new way to do something when you've been doing it another way for so long!

LO has never been so messy eating that it got around/under her bib in am excessive way. I do wipe her mouth and hands and sometimes tray as we go, and I don't let her play with her food, because I found that encouraged more messiness.

As for baths, I never avoided water in her face so she's used to it. I dump an entire pitcher of warm water on her head to rinse shampoo. Also when she's sitting, I just reach down and clean her butt (I guess I lift her legs or something) bit usually she is standing these days.

I don't even try to avoid water in his face anymore! He's totally used to it at this point and it doesn't phase him at all. I use a cup to rinse out his hair, and he usually gets a good amount of water in his face - at first he whined a bit about it, but now he just keeps playing while I'm rinsing it out!

Re: #2, my advice is to not try too hard to avoid getting water on her face. My husband usually does bath and very early on he let water get on face to get her used to it. We have both witnessed toddlers and even children flip the f out about putting their faces in water and we were like, NOPE - not happening over here.

@Mae: I am still trying to figure this stuff out too. For baths DS doesn't seem to mind water in his face though. If there is soap to rinse I just shield his eyes with my other hand or lay him down for a minute. Still working out a technique for the underbits.

Meals are messy at that age. I just try to be quick at cleaning and start with the hands.

For the bath we've got him used to getting some water on the face. As for his bottom at the end of the bath DH stands him up, washes and rinses and then out of the tub.

1. Meals are messy! We have "food" onsies which are just old stained ones that we put on for meal. When he is done, take off bib, take off tray, beeline it for the sink to clean hands and wet a cloth. Change clothes and wipe down face, hair, neck, legs, etc.
2. I wash hair with a washcloth to avoid soap and water in the eyes. If I have a hard time getting his bottom I will use the washcloth there before putting on the diaper.

1 - I don't think he's ever been all *that* messy, but it's been a while since did just purees. Usually the bib catches pretty much all of it. As for cleanup, I strap him into the high chair so first step is to take off the tray - before I started doing that I had the same chicken vs. egg issue with the tray and the hands. Once the tray is off I wipe his hands and then his face.

2 - I don't generally do baths and DH still hasn't exactly figured this out :silly:

@Mae: we used to do the cloth turtleneck under the plastic bib. She still got food on the neck of her shirts sometimes. I just did a lot of laundry and bought a lot of oxy clean. Clean up.... It depends on the day. We still have messes. She's 18 months and this week dumped the milky contents of her bib catcher into her lap. She's just a messy eater.

Bath- she doesn't mind water in her face. As for her bottom, I just kind of swish around when I can. I hope she's clean enough, tbh.

@Mae: Can answer #1 because I have it down to a science, especially because I hate anything slimy touching my skin and I hate stains.

Like you, I use a cotton/terry bib layered under a sleeved Bumkins bib. The cotton bib needs to be pulled up as high as it can go without choking him. I keep a plastic bag with Water Wipes next to me so I can wipe him whenever I want. When cleaning I start with hands so he can't wipe onto a clean surface. Then I clean his face and definitely under the chin. Then I quickly wipe the tray, etc, and peel off the vinyl bib so the sleeves are inside out and the bib doesn't touch anything but itself.

1) I still, at two years, keep a wet washcloth at the table. Wipe as you go. My mom taught me that and while it seemed a bit excessive, it's the only way to keep all clothes from getting ruined!

2) for hair, tip the head back to rinse. Then I just lift the bottom up with one hand while running the washcloth all around. I have twins. We go through a lot of washcloths!

1- we do BLW so it's messy!!! I wipe her hands and quickly remove the tray. Then I tackle her face.

2-I put one hand over her forehead and push it back as I pour water slowly with the other. I mostly try to avoid her ears, water in the face won't hurt her! As for her bottom, I stand her up at the end and lean her over my arm.

1) My kid eats in a diaper. Gigantic warm wet towel afterwards, quickly. They make ponchos...

2) I grab her under the armpits, lean her over my elbow, and hold her up while I wash her business with my other hand. I lay her back for hair washing, and she STILL hates it. Now she stands and i dump it on her. Water gets in her face. It's the end of the world, basically. She is not a fan

1) You don't. lol. You strip off their shirt and be prepared with the baby wipes after.

2) You let them get water in their face, honestly. We hold a rolled washcloth against her forehead to at least deflect some of the water, but it's pretty inevitable.

1) 16 months and meals are messy, no good advice on that one

2) water in her face isn't going to hurt her. My cousin teaches swim lessons and says it's good for them, he fusses for a few seconds but is fine afterward.

1 - Speed!! I haven't done purees in a while, so I can't really remember the order of things, but I think I removed the tray and just set it aside and immediately grabbed his hands and wiped them and then removed his bib and then wiped his face and neck down.

2 - Once Xander was sitting up for his bath, there was no avoiding getting water in his face when I rinsed him off until he was old enough to finally look up when I did it (which just started happening recent at 22+ months). I try to cover his forehead with a hand to protect his eyes but it doesn't always work. As for washing his bum, I usually just leaned him forward so I could get to it.

1) my kid won't even wear a bib is 16 months and still makes a giant mess. I just have to be very quick and sometimes I need a clothing change after lol

2) I don't know. We still put LO in her bath chair to wash her hair lol when she stays at my moms, my mom says she uses a cup to wet/rinse the back half of her head and wrings out a wash cloth on the top part so it doesn't get in her face

I feel like I haven't figured out the best way to do some VERY basic stuff and these are kind of dumb questions but.. well.. whatever.

1) How do you keep your kid moderately clean while feeding purees/messy foods? My LO makes a huuuuuge mess dribbling all down her face, chin, neck, arms, chest, etc. I have one of those bibs that goes over her arms too, and I put a second cotton bib on under the vinyl one to try to catch the goo dribbling down her neck. But she still generally ends up with puree on the neck of her shirts and in her lap (I've taken to feeding her pants less). Then when I go to clean her up after she is done I don't know what order to do things in. If I do her hands first she immediately hits the tray/bib and gets them dirty again. If I do the tray first she smears what is on her hands/bib onto it before I can get to that. If I remove the tray and try to do her hands she grabs the bib and stuff flies everywhere. If I remove the tray and bib she grabs her shirt and gets her clothes completely covered. I used to just feed her naked (just diaper) but now that we are feeding her a few times per day that is just not practical. So yea. What is your routine for cleaning a baby up after feeding??

2) Once a baby can sit up in the bath... how the hell do you wash them? lol LO has been sitting for a while but until tonight she would sit up for a bit while I washed her top half but also let me lay her back onto her mat thing so I could wash her bottom half and rinse her hair. Well now she is refusing to lay down at all. How do I rinse the shampoo out of her hair without getting water on her face. How do I wash her undercarriage when she is sitting on it??

I feel like I should know these things by 8 mo... but yea. I am failing at momming today :)

Would love to hear your thoughts, and also other people's dumb questions so I feel better!
