We used to thicken up Beechnut Stage 3 with baby oatmeal. However, in your case I would use Steel Cut.

Totally dumb rule.
Red lentils or split peas cook down to a puree texture, and I often mix spinach or another green veggie in with these and feed to my daughter. I second adding quinoa, oats, or another grain with veggies or soups to increase the density. Adding avocado or even coconut oil would up the fat and make any puree more filling.

I make chicken soup and puree it for my son. I drain all of the soup and set it aside, then puree all of the ingredients and then slowly add the soup back in to the desired consistency. I drink the leftover soup and it is delicious. I just make it with drumsticks, carrots and something green (spinach, kale or broccoli).

Thats a dumb rule.

What about oatmeal? You can even maybe add some other flavors/puree to it so he gets used to other flavors/textures. Grits and cheese grits could be the same category.

What is the reasoning behind that rule?? My 3 year old eats purees every day in the form of pouches. He loves them and it's an easy way to get veggies in him. If my daycare told me we couldn't send them, I'd probably tell them I decide what my kid eats and to feed what I send.

Some of the heartier purees I made:
sweet potato, quinoa, ground turkey
butternut squash, chickpeas, spinach
brown rice, peas, shredded chicken

I basically like to mix a grain, a protein and a vegetable together. I also generally add a little seasoning when appropriate.

@KT326: @sapphire: @DesertDreams88: @catomd00: I agree it is ridiculous. I didn't push back because LO was fairly slow on the finger foods and would choke (not gag) or vomit up his food regularly until about 11 months. He would get frustrated, not eat, and lost weight He just got to the point where I can offer him a plate of finger foods and he'd actually get enough to eat in the past month. It looks like his teeth are finally coming in, so I'm willing to give it another month.

Thanks for the ideas! Here's what I'm making:

- butternut apple soup with almond milk yogurt
- strawberry banana yogurt
- carrots, chicken, and quinoa
- sweet potatoes, kale, and chicken

That's a ridiculous rule! I'd point out to them that we don't chew with your front teeth anyways, so having the front four has zero impact on eating solids.

I haven't actually done this, but my dr told us to literally puree everything we are eating for dinner and give it to my son. So if we are eating lasagna, or chicken pot pie, or whatever just blend it all up.

You could try that.

@KT326: agree that this is really weird. Our daycare is almost the opposite - kids need to be able to eat foods off the regular daycare menu at 1 year old to more be into the next classroom. We can no longer bring in foods from home at that age. I see no medical reason to restrict to purees and worry more that your LO may not get enough to eat this way!

Weelicious has a lot of good ideas/ recipes as well! Sorry you're dealing with this! Our late teether hated purees and moved on quickly to tiny bites of regular food. I don't know what we would've done with that rule. She just got her fourth tooth at 17m.

I don't have any suggestions, I just wanted to say that's a very strange rule. Our pediatrician told us they don't need teeth to eat food as long as it's something you can squish between your thumb and forefinger. Their gums are pretty hard. I have a friend who's daughter didn't get her first tooth until 16 months old!

I basically take all our favorite soups and mild curries and add rice to it to thicken it up. I mix in the rice and then let it sit in the fridge overnight where it usually gets soggy and bloated from soaking up the liquid. Then I add some water to thin it out a bit if needed or put it in our food chopper if necessary.

Happy Baby makes a chicken veggie and quinoa pouch and a salmon and veggie one that we feed our 10 month old. We also make a rice porridge once a week with some combo of veggies and minced soft meat like rotisserie chicken or shredded beef. We just simmer some cooked rice with broth or water and add chopped veggies and meat and simmer until creamy and the veggies are soft. This week we made it with brown rice, rotisserie chicken, frozen spinach, minced up broccoli, and some shredded carrot.

Daycare has a rule that kids can only have purees until they have 4 teeth. My 13 month old is a late teether and I'm trying to find ideas for hardy purees to keep him full. I send 2 purees a day--one savory and one fruity. Any suggestions?

To make this more fun, LO is allergic to dairy, eggs, soy, and gluten.
