@Foodnerd81: Got it! I think you'll be fine. The trains tend to die down at around 10ish. Penn Station has lots of elevators. The great thing about NYC is that you can walk so easily and the subway stations aren't that far away from each other. I would just find a few that have elevators. Have fun!

If you're just going directly on the PATH to Penn Station and not taking any other subways lines and going midday, you'll be fine! There's definitely elevators at Penn Station and I doubt the train will be crowded...
I'd probably still wear baby tho, just for convenience and bring a big carryall bag for schlepping.

@BKCaribBaby: We don't have an umbrella stroller yet (this thought process also prompted my recent 'what umbrella stroller' post! :) ) I could wear her but I'm worried I'd have too much other stuff to carry, and that she would get sick of being in the carrier when I'm not walking around, like on the train.

I think you should be fine during the day. Do you have an umbrella stroller? Granted we live in Brooklyn, but LO doesn't go into the city very much. If we do, we mostly wear her. Is that an option? there are some subway stations with elevators. If you check the MTA map you can see which ones. You can either Google or check the map itself for the wheelchair accessible symbol.

@Anagram: No transfer, it goes directly to Penn. @lioneyes: No subway, I'd have people meet me near the station. I'd really hate to carry a big stroller up stairs-- I've never looked for elevators from most of the platforms either. But good idea about taking the carrier just in case.

@meredithNYC: Yeah I'm definitely not driving in. Just not worth it to an anxious driver like me!

@Foodnerd81: DO you know if you'll have to transfer to the Path or if you'll go directly on NJ transit trains to Penn?

I think in Midday, leaving the stroller intact with baby in it is fine--I think *technically* the rule is that you fold it, but I see most babies still sitting in their stroller. The folding rule is probably only enforced if the train is crowded.

There are elevators at Penn station, but I haven't ever used one (I've never been on an NJ transit train, only PATH).

Maybe take a baby carrier just in case an elevator is not working? Then you can wear baby and fold the stroller and carry it up stairs/escalators?

you should be fine on a mid day train. lots of 4 seaters by the doors, and some cars have side facing seats that would also work. biggest issue will be once you get to penn station, i don't think all of the platforms have elevators up to the station level, so you might have to carry the stroller up the stairs, then find an elevator to get out of the station to ground level. same with the subway, if you're planning on taking that once you get to the city, try to look up the stations and see if they have elevators.

I've only gone on Metro North with my stroller, not NJT, but I imagine it would be much the same. Usually we just roll the stroller on board and I look for a spot right by the entrance and I park it forward facing. On an off peak train, there usually isn't any issue.

I live in Stamford and honestly, when we go into the city we tend to drive since it's just easier (though the hefty parking fees truly suck). When we lived in the city we did the subway once with the Vista and even with my husband helping it was a serious pain. I'm not all that familiar with the PATH, but if there are elevators you should be okay. I found with the Vista just going up and down the steps was the worst thing.

If you live in a suburb of NYC, or in NYC and travel to the suburbs, how do you get in and out of the city with baby? I'm visiting family in NJ and considering going into the city for lunch, but trying to wrap my head around logistics. Can I take an UB Vista on NJ Transit in the middle of the day (not rush hour)? Is it a huge pain? If we went, I'd have people meet me near Penn Station, and my parents' house is close to an NJ Transit station. I could also do carrier but I feel like I'll want to have the basket of the stroller. I'd leave the carseat in the car and use the regular UBV seat. Would they make me take her out of the stroller and fold it up?

I can't believe I'm stressed or confused by this-- I live in a city, and I grew up outside NYC and lived there for 5 years, but none of that time was with a baby!
