@snowjewelz: Exurbs are a bit farther out, beyond the ring of suburbs surrounding a city. I think it was a big trend for a while, but they stopped growing when the price of gas went up for a while? I'm no expert though!

I live in the suburbs, but we live near a lot of shopping/restaurants/etc, and we frequently walk to the store or to dinner or to the playground when it's nice out. I love being able to walk! We won't be living in this location much longer, and I will miss the walking.

I live in the suburban country- a development of 100 houses surrounded by farms. I can't really walk anywhere, but I typically get my 10000 steps in just at work.

I used to live in the city and walked everywhere. I miss that but if I lived elsewhere now I'd miss the cows, horses, and chickens I see every morning on my way to daycare/work.

Suburbs and unless I'm diligent, I do just about zero walking. Go into my garage and get in my car, drop off LO, drive to work (90 minutes), park in a parking garage, take an elevator up to my floor, sit at a desk all day, go down the elevator, pick up LO, drive home to my garage (90 minutes). Sit at home all night.

I have to go exercise at home/go to the gym and walk on my lunch break or I would literally never move. Lately I've been eating at my desk and walking around a pond near my office and its lovely.

Everyone around me is in pretty much the same scenario: drive very far distances and sit all day. I'm working on a career move that involved more movement and I can't wait because I feel like I'm slowly dying with this level of sedentary days.

I dream of living in a place where I could just walk. I live on the edge of the inner city in Portland, and it isn't a terribly walkable area. I'm able to ride my bike everywhere, but I would adore walking more. My ideal life would be living in a highly walkable city, walking 3-5 miles a day, and then doing other active things a few more times a week.

I am all about multitasking, and that's one of the things I love the most about city living- we walk *almost* everywhere. We live on a hill which is fantastic exercise, and with an active dog and no yard - even in the winter we get tons of exercise. When it is cold there are so many places to duck into, we still venture forth. We have a nice indoor/outdoor mall too, around the bend, and some other great city stores. The parks keep us walking and in great shape in nicer weather, and the takeout and restaurants of course. When LO starts school it will be .8 miles (one way) twice a day! One of the best things is living next to... 4 major grocery stores! (Especially while pregnant. :) ) We didn't walk that much when rural. Right now DH even walks to work which is AMAZING.

I live in a small town of about 10K and we walk quite a bit, especially when it's not winter. Being a block from my husband's office, several parks, and about 6 blocks from town means it's very easy to walk places. We also bike a fair amount. Driving is usually reserved for when I need to haul something (groceries), longer trips out of town or to visit a friend in the country, or if we are just in a rush and timeliness is important and I haven't quite planned ahead for walking/biking.

City and I walk a lot- less at the moment because I'm 9 months pregnant but generally we walk a ton. That's one of my biggest concerns about moving to the suburbs, which we likely will this summer.

Grew up in the burbs and hardly walked anywhere.

I live in a city and walk everywhere! Like, my normal commute is about 20 mins, or 1.2 miles, so that x2 is my minimum for a work day.

Live in the city but not right in the center and th only real walking I do is with the dog. I commute 30 miles to work every day so obviously I need a car for that. DH hasn't had a car since July though and has been walking/biking to work because it's less than 2 miles away.

I live in the suburbs of a mid-sized city. We walk to our local library and coffee shop regularly. There is also a pizza place and bar we go to occasionally. We also walk to the various parks around us. The largest park/community center/splash pad is walkable and whenever there are events there, we walk.

There are many more restaurants/Walgreen's/grocery store/shops, etc. that are in walking distance, but we only walk to them when we have time or if the weather is nice.

City, and I walk everywhere. I hardly ever drive. If I have to do an errand that isn't walking distance from home or work, I will definitely spend some time trying to figure out if it's really necessary or if there's a workaround. I feel pretty spoiled that way.

Very urban city. I walk almost everywhere. We have a car garaged a few blocks from us. I take it out maybe once a week to do a target/Costco/fairway run
Our stroller probably has more miles put on it per week than our car!!!

When we lived in the city, I got fewer steps than I do in the suburbs now. When I go into work, I walk to the train, walk to work, and back. Just walking around our house I average about 5,000 steps a day.

We live in the suburbs and rely on our cars to commute and run bigger errands, but we do a fair amount of walking, too. We walk to get groceries, dry cleaning, pharmacy, etc. and DS's daycare is in walking distance. I would love to live car-free and in the city or close-in suburbs, but my DH is more of a country guy so this is our compromise!

We live in a neighborhood in a small town, and walk nearly every day. We can walk to the downtown area, to multiple hiking trails, and several small lakes. Most nights we just go on walks through the neighborhoods. I grew up going on nightly walks, in addition to lots of hiking, so it seems normal to me. One of the main reasons we wanted to move to this area was all of the great walking available.

I live in the suburbs but work in a city, so my activity depends on what's going on at work. I work on a campus so sometimes walk a lot, sometimes not.

I grew up in a rural area and then went to college in a city. I lost 40 lbs my freshman year simply because of the change from driving everywhere to living without a car and taking public transportation and walked everywhere.
