@CatchAFallingStar: Sure! I did modified CIO, I guess. I followed what a lot of other women wrote -- just stick to a simple routine every time. So I started with nap time (something others had said not to do), got the room all dark and turned on both a fan and a white noise machine. I put her in her sleep sack (the same one I use at bedtime) to signify sleep to her, rocked her with a paci for just a minute while I sang a quick song and put her down while she was still awake and walked away.

She had longer cry outs to start for the first 2 days (with checks) where she just didn't want to sleep. But I just kept at it with the naps and by day 3 it was starting to work like clock work. The cries subsided (and were lighter when she did fuss) and she began falling asleep very quickly when I would put her down in her crib.

By the 3rd day, a friend inspired me to go for it at bedtime. I did the same routine and she had a few wake ups, but it went well! She stayed in her crib the whole night and I didn't cave in. Note that her crib is in the room with me -- that may be a help or a detriment to some babies. I did notice that the quicker the checks, the better it was for her. If I stayed around too long it was just more upsetting for her.

When I do check on her for naps, I usually pick her up and rock her for just a solid minute and then lay her back down with her paci. Other times (like at night) I simply give her her paci, pat her gently and walk back to the bed. I feed her once a night during one of her wake-ups when I think she needs it. She has a few wake-ups a night where she can put herself back to sleep. Those are quite amazing to me, coming from where we did!

That may have been more info than you were looking for, lol. So I'll sum it up for you and anyone reading: stick to the routine, be confident, know that your baby is OK and it's OK to cry a little, and the first couple days are the hardest! You'll see the magic happen very quickly after that. :) And sorry that it took me a while to reply!

(Side note that my daughter is now teething so she has a few more wake-ups atm but the routine is still the same.)

@mrsbubbletea: If you're not ready, it's ok! I tried at 4 months and it was a bust. Neither of us were ready. But in my very short experience I've realized it's kinda like potty training - try it when you're ready and if it doesn't work then try again in a month or so. If you are ready, go for it! You deserve the better nights and you'll feel like a new mommy for it.

@PixieStix: ugh I hope you can inspire me to get down to it with my almost 6m old. I was close to starting but she got a cold and I just couldn’t while she was sick.

Congrats! Sleep is the best. Sometimes we’re our own worst enemies and I often remind myself not to put adult emotions on baby problems

I just had to say thank you to those of you who stopped by and gave me advice and encouragement with sleep training my 8 month old.

It's been 1 week and as of last night, she slept 10 hours straight in her crib without needing to be comforted. Her cat naps of 15 minutes are gone, and she can now nap an hour and a half or longer! No longer are we cosleeping or relying on carriers for naps. It's amazing.

I always thought my kids were just "special" in terms of sleep habits and not being very good sleepers, but I see a whole new light now! I didn't think sleep training was very gentle or a good/necessary thing, but boy was I wrong. I'm now going to be a big advocate of sleep training and help encourage other mothers, just as y'all have.

Much love, mommas. 💜
