We have a small sedan (Acura TSX) as our primary vehicle with two kids. We're comfortable and not looking to upgrade any time soon. We have gone on road trips (14+ hours) with no problems. Our trunk space is tiny, but we're great at making everything fit. The only issue we run into is buying bigger items at the store.

Thanks for the responses so far. To clarify: the focus electric has the same backseat, but the trunk is slightly smaller. DH and I are both tall, and depending on how IF treatment goes, there is definitely a risk of twins (though RE estimates 5% with current plan, more if we end up needing IVF). It doesn't need to be amazingly comfortable, just not miserable.

I think it would be ok. It's unlikely both parents and kid(s) would all be in the car at once so it's fine if the passenger side has to scoot way forward. And unless you have kids super close together you can probably have the older LO FF by the time another baby was born, even if they were still RF in the mail car.

If you had twins you could have a problem though.

Can you lease? Our state gives a cash rebate for electric car leases. A friend has two little ones and they drive a Ford C-Max. Their kids are 18 months and 4 so I'm sure they are both in convertibles. We have a Prius Plug-in and it fits our son's convertible just fine plus a decent sized trunk. I think a total electric vehicle would be tight in the trunk - like the Leaf or Fiat or BMW i3.

We lease a VW e-Golf and LO #2 is on his way! We might trade in my Mazda 3 hatchback for a small SUV so we have one larger car as an option, but as long as the car seats fit it'll work!

We lease a Nissan leaf. It is our commuter car and it works well because my husband has access to a free charging station at his work. We can go about 80 miles on a charge.

I don't know that car specifically but we have two kids and two sedans now. Totally doable to have one for commuting. The only potential issue I see is if you want two kids rear facing at the same time. Rear facing seats can cut into front seat leg room significantly. If #1 is rear facing when #2 arrives you might have to be careful about car seat selection.

Is leasing an option? That way you don't have to necessarily make a long term commitment to the vehicle and reassess needs once you have kids? With leasing there is always the option of buying it out once the term length ends.

I saw a Ford Focus (not electric) parked out front of a Subway yesterday, and it had 3 convertible car seats in a row in the back seat!

So yes, doable! Not ideal for your daily driver or only car with two kids (because strollers and bags and pAck and plays and everything else tale up a lot of space and you will likely want another larger vehicle), but if it's not your main car I think it will be great!

We found out we need to buy DH a new car much quicker than planned. He really wants an electric car, and I like the idea too. While we love the Tesla, it is hard to justify the cost when we can get a Ford Focus electric for much cheaper. We both really like the Focus Electric, and the short range shouldn't be an issue since DH's commute will soon drop to under 10 miles round trip. The only issue is the size of the car and kids. We don't have kids yet, and have been dealing with IF. I would like to be able to wait on the car decision until we have more answers, but that is not possible. We want two kids, and want to be able to fit them in the car. We wouldn't do long trips with this car anyway (range is too short), but if DH is dropping off kid(s) at daycare or driving around town, is this doable? Thanks!
