I should update, either the “no food outside the chair” method worked or she just got bored of screaming 🤪 - back to climbing in to eat without issue. She still doesn’t always want to stay there (and fights me on plenty of other things) but this is a huge improvement!

My 15 month old has started doing this. Only when I'm home. She's ok when it's just DH, but if I'm around she fights sitting in the chair, fights eating, and follows me around demanding milk instead.

Living through this with my 18 month old right now!! Fortunately he only eats 1-2 meals a day at home during the week. Breakfast is fine, he happily sits in his high chair. But dinner is another story. He will fuss and whine and refuse to eat. It drives me nuts so I admit after I am done eating I will typically let him sit with me for a it. Which then makes my older DS jealous and ask to sit on DH's lap. Just trying to survive the phase and continue to put him in the chair.

@JJ2626: oh I so hope it’s only a week here too!! Today is maybe day 4? The bribing is only partially working so we’ve also just been forcing the issue with straps. Tonight there was at least 10 minutes of painful high decibel screaming but then she calmed down and ate so 🤷‍♀️

If it’s only been a few days, I’d just keep trying and yes, bribing her. Put something you know she likes on the tray so she has to sit there to get it. My LO did this around the same age but it only lasted like a week I think and now at 2 she is still in it.

@agold: yes to the jungle gym! Luckily with ours if I remember to always keep the tray on she can’t do too much, but of course I sometimes forget and I’m so afraid she’s going to fall one of these times.

@BadgerMom: I think that’s a good strategy to make it 100% and start with something she really likes. Right after I posted this my big kids got her to sit in it by offering a piece of cookie and then she ate her whole breakfast! Not that I want to make a habit of the cookie part :silly:

This happened with my second somewhere around a year. In addition to clamoring out, she used it as a jungle gym when not in use. So we reluctantly got rid of it and moved her into the oxo tot nest booster. while it does keep her in place, she’s such a mess. You can’t put the plastic thing under the chair like you would under a high chair because the kids can kick the regular chair away from the table. I wish we would have insisted on the high chair, but not sure how that would have gone down. Look into the oxo booster or something similar. Good luck!

This happened with my first at right about this time. We gave in and got a toddler chair. It’s one of my “first child” parenting regrets. My mom continued to use a highchair at her house and made it non negotiable for him and he stayed in the highchair over there for YEARS! I think what helped is that he’d have to sit in the highchair over there for any food so if he’d want to eat a snack (best if it was something he loved) into the highchair he’d go.

Taking any ideas or advice!

My very opinionated 18 month old decided a couple days ago that she will NOT sit in the high chair for meals. She eats three meals a day at home so this is a major problem! I think it may have started with a bad teething diaper rash but that’s fine now.

I’ve been trying to just put the straps on and let her work it out but she’s a kid who will just scream and scream. However I really don’t want to cave and let her eat on my lap or standing up as I’m afraid we’ll be stuck with it, and we tried a regular chair yesterday but it’s too messy, she doesn’t sit still, etc. I SAH and solo a lot so I feel like giving up the high chair is a big mistake but endless screaming during meals is wearing me down fast :bummed:
