Both of my kids had it from very young, like younger than 3 months. We could never just pass them off to anyone or they would freak out. My son was better around a year. My daughter is 21 months and is still very anxious around strangers and it takes her awhile to warm up to them. On the other hand, my brother's kid has been very receptive to strangers from birth and she will go in anyone's arms, no problem!

@Rockies11: Interesting! It totally threw me because he never did it before. He's very social and he loves being around people, hates it when he's in a room alone for even a few minutes. He loves DH but he definitely has a mommy preference, especially when he's tired.

Mine is the same age and does the same thing. My older girl always had stranger anxiety and still does. I think where they didn't before, they tend to go through phases. With my older, I think it's more of a personality thing.

I stopped my my neighbors' house today with my 4.5 month old. They haven't really seen him since he was a newborn. I handed him off to the wife (who is very sweet and has 4 kids of her own) and he suddenly looked like he was about to cry! His eyes got all watery and he pouted out his lip like he was about to bawl.

By contrast, last week at the peds office he was all smiles with everyone and even let one nurse hold him. He warmed up to the neighbors quick, but I wasn't prepared for him to have stranger anxiety already! Should I expect this to get worse? Will he do this with the nanny...my mom...DH?

Tell me about your stranger anxiety experiences.
