@agold: Yeah, it appears my local Target (not local grocery stores... I don't have a Whole foods that is super close) has Siggi's. I already picked up some and the babies seem to like it. I got the mixed berry and the strawberry rhubarb... funny that the babies had rhubarb before I did.

I'm all out of them now, but the next time I go to Target, I'll pick some more up.

@bluestriped bee: I second the Siggi's recommendation. It has a very different flavor that takes some getting used to. But it has such a lower sugar content that the others now taste ridiculous. I think there is a chobani option that has super low sugar. Its hard to find.

@Mrs. Microscope: the siggis is amazing (4%). I was hoping someone would mention it. I had a moment at work a few weeks ago when I randomly read the label and explained to my coworkers "guys only 8 grams!!!" My nutritionist buddy perked up. Too bad they are$$ but worth it imo

@T.H.O.U.: the chobani needs to be refrigerated, I believe. I will look into some over the counter baby probiotics since I loaded up on some shelf stable yogurt found on amazon. When I can, I do grab some Siggi's Greek yogurt that was suggested in one of the threads. It has low sugar content.

(ETA: Yes, it was Mrs.Microscope's recommendation that made me look at Siggi's. )

@bluestriped bee: If all you care about is straight up introducing dairy and shelf stable, I would just get the Earth's Best Sesame Street Yogurt Smoothies. They have less sugar than the ones you posted and are easy to find.

@bluestriped bee: Look at the comparison I just posted. I think because the first 2 ingredients of that pouch is a puree, it probably contains very very little greek yogurt. Which is ok if youre just trying to introduce a bit of dairy to them. But I would consider that much more a puree pouch than greek yogurt (bad marketing on the label :(

But yes, also look into the live and active cultures. Thats basically the "good stuff" of yogurt that you want to help with the digestive "gut". But again, that may not be your priority right now.

@T.H.O.U.: my chart really shows the protein to be pretty much the same in all Greek yogurts so I'm not concerned.

As for the live cultures, I'm really introducing the yogurt for the dairy. I'll look into the live cultures aspect.

I found a shelf stable greek yogurt. Sugar content is high (not too high according to my chart) but it is sweeten by purees. So I guess that's better.

@Mrs. Microscope: Oh, ok, cool. Though, it's pretty hard to find in my area. My local target does carry the 4% whole milk in mixed fruit flavor. If I want plain, I have to go into the city to get it. Isn't a huge problem since I work in the city.

@bluestriped bee: yes it is Siggis Icelandic style skyr 4% milkfat strained whole-milk yogurt. It is by far the lowest sugar content yogurt that I have found that doesn't contain artificial sweeteners. They also have a plain unflavored version with even less sugar.

@Mrs. Microscope: Is that the Skyr 4% whole milk yogurt? I see on their website they make Skyr 0%, 2% and 4% yogurt.

I just put that into my spreadsheet and it does look like Siggi's fruit flavored yogurt does have less sugars than other fruit flavored yogurt from other makers.

Siggi's 4% whole milk yogurt with mixed fruit has 0.066 grams of sugar per gram of yogurt. Stonyfield Greek whole milk yogurt with strawberry has 0.10 grams of sugar per gram of yogurt.

When I compare Siggi's vanilla versus Stonyfield vanilla (both whole milk and both strained ... maybe comparable to Stonyfield's greek)... Siggi's has 0.064 grams of sugar and Stonyfield has 0.080 grams of sugar per gram of yogurt.

I buy Daiya Greek yogurts from my stop and shop non dairy section. They are like 8 grams of protein and 6 grams of sugar. The sugar content in most yogurts enrages me.

Also, doing my research for when my buddy can have dairy, I found Wallaby Organix Purely Unsweetened, its greek yogurt with fruit as the only sugar. Looks good!

I mostly buy plain Greek yogurt and mix in chopped up fruit and a little granola. The yogurt has some sugar from the milk (lactose) and the fruit has natural sugars, but the are no added sugars. The granola I use is sweetened, but I can control the amount I add to each bowl.

When LO was a baby he would eat it plain, but now I think it's too tart for him without fruit or granola.

When I want to buy flavored yogurt, I get Siggi's because it's a lot less sweet than most brands. I especially like their full fat flavors, but they're hard to find.

When LO was younger i bought plain yogurt which still has sugar even though it isn't added. Then i added in my fruit purees. Now that she is older she gets the Yoplait kids yogurt that has less sugar Than the regular one

@T.H.O.U.: So I did a quick search on it and found a few links. Oh, I did look on pubmed to see if there are any studies but found nothing.

At this moment, I'm only giving the twins yogurt to add to diary. Probiotics is not really high on my list. I think once they are 1 and we start giving them milk, I'll reconsider what I give them for yogurt.

https://www.consumerlab.com/answers/I+am+curious+why+some+probiotics+do+not+require+refrigeration+even+though+they+contain+some+of+the+same+bacteria+in+probiotics+that+require+refrigeration%3F+Which+probiotics+need+to+be+refrigerated%3F/probiotic_refrigeration/

"There is a common misconception that probiotics kept in the fridge are better than those that are shelf-stable. Now this may have been the case in the past, but modern sophisticated freeze-drying techniques such as lyophilisation ensure that the probiotics remain viability at room temperature. Remember with shelf stability of your probiotics comes the convenience to travel with them, keep them at your desk or even at your bedside table so you don't forget them in the morning! So don’t just automatically walk to the fridge when looking for a probiotic, go looking on the shelf instead."

@bluestriped bee: I know you said you were focusing on shelf stable and I haven't done research but in my mind it feels like these have to be "less good". Kinda like how shelf stable probiotics aren't as good as the live ones that need to be refrigerated.

If you need another option could you look at maybe freezing yogurt? They dethaw nicely.

@GoGoSnoGirl: yes I think j would like to "wean" my kids off the flavored stuff some. Maybe scoop an extra spoon of plain into their flavored. Eventually get to a 50/50 mix.

Yes an average surging of milk has sugar. So in my mind if they are going to have the dairy (and sugar) it might as well have the protein in it too to help fill them up.

We buy organic whole milk yogurt & just stir in our homemade fruit purees & chia seeds, then chill to hydrate the chia seeds. It's LO's favorite thing to eat these days! I could never go back to eating store-bought flavored yogurts, myself, because they taste sickeningly sweet to me now.

I was curious about this once, and if you look at milk there is some (natural) sugar in milk. So even though I make my own yogurt and don't add anything to it, it is still going to have some sugar in it.

@bluestriped bee: There is a difference between the natural sugar that occurs in any dairy or fruit and the added sugar put into products when they are flavored. Even if you end up with the same amount of total sugar in grams, it's healthier to stir in some fruit puree to plain yogurt than to get flavored with added sugars. The USDA is going to start labeling food with both how much total sugar vs. added sugar your food has.

Also, the amount of spinach added to baby yogurt is probably pretty small and is just for marketing- maybe try to puree your own or add some from a baby food jar to the fruit puree/ yogurt mix? I would add green veggies to blueberry or plum puree since they are darker and my DD never noticed lol.

I didn't think my kid would like plain yogurt, but that's what DH bought so I gave it to him. He eats it the same as flavored yogurt, so it's worth trying.

@Madison43: Yeah, I looked at whole milk yogurt for both baby version and regular and I don't see a difference... once again, the caveat being baby versions are usually all flavored.

@Mrs. Lion: I think the only difference is yobaby is made with whole milk, so as long as you're comparing that with other full fat yogurt, they are totally the same.
