This is my go-to after years of not loving recipies that I tried.

http://bakeat350.blogspot.com/2008/04/taste-of-yellow-yellow-rose-sugar.html

You use cold butter and don't have to refridgerate overnight! Score!

I do reccommend putting the cut out cookies in the freezer for a bit so that they keep their shape.

@wheres_c: Yeah, you really have to want some cookies to use that recipe! I usually only make it around Christmas time and give a bunch away.

@mrs. wagon: thanks for the tip. The link that @fussygal posted also mentions that.

Usually I am not super concerned, but I am trying to make cross cookies for LO's Baptism. I gave it a trial run yesterday before posting and the crosses looked like shamrocks. SO asked if I baked st pattys cookies. #fail.

@pelikila: thanks so much for sharing the family recipe. 9 dozen!

@bpcmarj: I'm all for that! Have you ever tried cutting shapes?

Seriously everyone thank you so much. I Will post pics once I try.

I use Ina Garten's shortbread cookie recipe!!

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/shortbread-cookies-recipe/index.html

Here's a tip: if you want the shape to hold, keep the cookies as thin as possible AND chill them before you bake them. I keep the cut cookies on the cookie sheets in the fridge for at least an hour before i put them in the oven. Annoying, but totally worth it!!

I use my great grandmother's recipe.

Grandma Olivia's Sugar Cookies
Approx. 9 dozen cookies

1 cup margarine, softened (2 sticks)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
2 eggs
1 scant cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. vanilla extract
4-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. salt

Cream margarine and sugars together. Add eggs and oil and mix well. Add vanilla extract. Sift together dry ingredients. Gradually add dry ingredients to butter mixture. Chill dough (at least 1 hour). Preheat oven to 375° F. Make dough into balls the size of a walnut. Place balls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Press each ball with cookie press. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.

Grandma Olivia always used the end of an old plastic spool of thread as a cookie press for these cookies. She dipped the spool in sugar between each pressing. The end of the spool looked like a sectioned pie, which gave the cookies a flower-like appearance. You can also roll out the dough and use cookie cutters.

This is the one I always use to make Christmas cookies except I always add orange zest. Tastes sooo good with the bits of orange peel in it. I make it with powdered sugar frosting.

I need a recipe that works well with cookie cutters!
I made cookies today and while they were super tasty, they lost the shape that i cut with the cutter.
It doesnt have to be a sugar cookie....but no chips or raisins!
