When I was trying to come up with a nap schedule for my unscheduled baby, I read a tip to take a week and record every nap and length and then set the nap schedule when you see the sleepy ranges. It seemed to me before I did that that we were really all over the place, but after a couple of days even it was clear that there was a pattern. I had been planning on 2-3-4, but it was clear after keeping track that she was on 3-3-3 so 2-3-4 would have been an exercise in frustration! So now she wakes up at 6 am, naps 9, 12, 3 and bed at 6. It varies sometimes, but pretty much always she's going 3 hours between naps.

@edelweiss: Yes, I know that land well. This schedule would be for weekends and for her grandma days - daycare sleep is its own animal.

@littlecasita1122: @hilsy85: @scg00387: @Trailmix: Good points on the 2-3-4. The idea of only having to try to get her down twice a day is very appealing - two 30 minute naps, not so much. I'm wondering if I could try for the 2-3-4 and then add in the late afternoon cat nap like @Anagram: does when she needs it. If she would sleep more than 30 minutes at a time I think she would be good on just two naps.

My twins are 6.5 months and we've been doing a loose version of 2-3-4 and it usually works well (of course, today I've only gotten two 45 min naps out of DS but DD 1.5 hours this am and is coming up on 2 hours now!). A typical schedule looks like:
6:00 am wake-up (kill me now, please)
8:30 am nap
10:30 am awake
1:30 pm nap
3:00 awake
6:30-7:00 pm bedtime

My LO is 5 months and we have 2 long naps and 1 cat nap. I did a light version of nap training right after 3 months. Nap training for me meant 1)introducing a nap routine 2) tightening up her schedule and no more naps out and about 3) letting her fuss for 5-10 minutes if it didn't progress to crying to get her over the 45 minute nap hump. As in, if she woke up after only 45 minutes, I would just let her fuss a few minutes until she went back to sleep. I only had to go back in to pick her up 3-4 times on different days and then she started just sleeping through.

So if wakeup is 7:

1st nap at 8:30 (sleep 1.5-2 hours)
awake from 10:30-12:30
2nd nap at 12:30 (sleep 1.5-2 hours)
awake from 2:30-4:30
3rd nap at 4:30 (sleep 30 min)
awake from 5-7
bedtime routine at 7, asleep by 7:30 pm

@Revel: If you're already having crappy naps, I'd just try the 2 nap thing. That's what we were doing at 6 months, and the first time he started napping longer than 45 minutes. 2-3-4 worked for us until 8 or 9 months, and he was asleep by 6:30 most nights, for the night.

If you think she's ready to move to 2 naps, you can try either the 2-3-4 schedule or pick 2 times, like 9am and 2pm, and have her nap then. At that age, my LO was still on 3 naps though--I think til about 7 months or so. his naps lengthened around 6.5/7 months o their own.

The 2-3-4 schedule worked well for my LO around that age. He finally started sleeping longer than 45 minutes at a time and would stretch to two 90 minute naps a day.

@Revel: yes, still in the land of crappy daycare naps. the "schedule" i talked about was obviously for weekends. on weekdays it was much more regular! one 30-minute nap around 12pm and ta-da! that's it! anyway, i have a very good feeling you'll be able to get her on a schedule--fingers crossed!

@edelweiss: yes, this is pretty much my life right now - only the last few weeks she won't take more than three naps so she's just super tired too. I think you've commented on my threads about poor daycare naps too - our LOs must be similar.

My thought on the schedule was to seize on the occassional long naps she's been taking and see if I can repeat them if she's on a schedule. Haha, but I could be dreaming.

@Beyond2: That is good to hear! I'm hoping that it might work for us.

@Revel: Once my son really got on the schedule his naps all lengthened except the last one. That was always a cat nap, but it really helped him and it gave me a chance to get dinner ready :-)

we were doing at least 3 naps at that point, with about 2 hours awake time between each nap. but within those general parameters, it was all over the place. i think at that stage LO was taking a lot of 45-minute naps which usually led to 4-nap days. not fun.

Thanks all for the suggestions! I suspect she'll need the third nap for a while still, so some variation of 9-9:30, 1 and then 5 pm cat nap might be the way to start. I'd love to get her on the 2-3-4 but I'm not sure she's ready yet.

Did anyone find that naps lengthened once you got onto a set schedule?

My DD takes two naps a day and the 2-3-4 plan works really well for us. However, at 6 months she was still taking 3 naps and was not really on a schedule. The rigid schedule (meaning she doesn't like to deviate) didn't come until about 9 months.

Our 2-nap 2-3-4 schedule looks like this:
7:00-7:30 - wake up
2 hours after wake up, so 9:30-ish - nap 1 (usually about 60 minutes)
3 hours after nap 1 ends, so usually 1:30 - nap 2 (usually about 90 minutes)
7:15-ish - bedtime (about 4 hours after nap 2 ends, but she goes to bed at about 7:15 regardless of the nap schedule)

My LO just turned 7 months old, but here's what his nap schedule looked like a month ago (lately he's been fighting me on that first nap and sometimes skipping it.)

7am - Wake up for the day
9am - Go down for a short nap, typically just 45 minutes or an hour.
12pm - Long nap, sleeps until 2:30ish
5 or 5:30pm - Another short nap
8pm - bedtime (sometimes 7:30 depending on how that last nap went.)

My 6 month old is waking and going down for the night around the same time as yours. We had been struggling with naps during the day, but just recently something seems to have clicked and we are on this schedule: @ 9am she takes a 45 min nap, @ 12 an hour nap, up for 30 minutes, down for another hour and then at 4:30 or 5 she takes another 30 minute nap.

At 6 months my LO was just starting to transition to 2 naps, but it took a good 2 months before she was strictly on 2 naps. Here is what I would suggest:

7am- Wake up
9:00am- Nap 1, for hopefully 1- 1 1/2 hours
1:00pm- Nap 2, for hopefully 1- 1 1/2 hours
5:00pm- Nap 3, short cat nap for 30 minutes
7:30pm- bedtime

My LO dropped the short cat nap around 7/8 months I believe? And then we just put her to bed earlier (6ish) and spread out the time between her naps.

More of my favorite topic these days - baby sleep. My LO has always been tough to get down for naps, and only takes cat naps. She's never really been on a schedule other than for her morning nap around 9:30, but her naps have been ALL over the place lately, and she's actually been taking a few longer ones (1 hr+). So I think she may be ready for a schedule.

What would you suggest we aim for in setting up a nap schedule?

She typically wakes at 7 am (range of 6:45 am to 7:30am) and we start bedtime at 7pm, asleep by 7:30ish usually.
