@castilrm: If you have a mountain buggy double I would bring that for sure since it's so compact/lightweight. I have a joovy caboose but I would never travel with it because it's so heavy and the handling is not great for tight airports and city streets. DD1 is 3.5 and DD2 is 1 and when we travel we usually just bring DD2's snap and go and a carrier and make DD1 walk. Though we haven't done a city trip since DD2 was born, so most of the walking was through the airport and DD1 was fine with that holding someone's hand.
Have fun and report back which option you went with and any tips as I'm sure this question will come up again.

@Mommy Finger: @castilrm: We bought the ultralight version of this stroller in hopes of using it on our trip but had to return it after one use because it was so difficult to push with both kids in it. It handled fine indoors but pushing up a small hill in our neighborhood was excruciating to my wrists (it kept pulling towards the street). Not sure if the heavier version works better but something to be aware of. For reference, DD1 is 34-35 lbs and DD2 was 19-20 at the time.

I'd go with the double. We just traveled with two single umbrella strollers (plus a buggy board), and it was a pain to get the strollers around the airport. In the US, I wouldn't hesitate to travel with a double stroller. We thought my four year old would be excited for the buggy board, but she wanted to sit in the stroller most of the time.

I'd go for the double. Even if you end up baby wearing here & there, you can always use her seat for stuff!

@castilrm: My older one is 5.5 now and we only stopped using it b/c he's old enough to walk on his own now. Otherwise, he's still comfortable in it. We might bring it with us to the zoo or somewhere else where we're going to be out for a long time.

The one thing to mention is that we went from a Citi Mini/Citi Select and both of those handle really well. This one isn't quite as good but I was able to sell the others to more than cover this one.

@Mommy Finger: thanks! I had initially been considering buying something like that and haven’t totally ruled it out but it feels like I’m drowning in baby equipment these days so I’m hoping to not buy another stroller (or large ticket item) unless I can use it regularly and for an extended period of time. But I’ll take another look at this one - how long were you able to use it for before your oldest was uncomfortable in the jump seat?

How about a sit n stand? It's more compact than a double stroller but it does the job. We got this when we traveled with kids right around yours.

Thanks all! My three year old is happy to walk and lead the way when she has one of her buddies with her or we’re somewhere she is excited to explore. If we’re just walking around though, she can get whiny (and lags behind or wanders off, so having some sort of “containment” for her is helpful!) and will get frustrated that her little sister is in a stroller but she is not. So I think we’re stuck taking one seat for each kid.... leaning toward just taking the double so one parent has his hands free to deal with bags and such

I think it depends on your 3 year old personality? Right now we are on a trip with a 2.5 yr old and a 4 month old, and we are doing just fine with a single stroller with a large basket below, with the Ergo as backup. Baby can go in stroller or Ergo, toddler mostly walks but can be carried by DH or ride in the basket of the stroller below (he is cramped but he loves it.) The stroller is one of those car seat clicks in ones.

My kids entertain each other in the double whereas my younger one gets fussy if he’s in the stroller too long without his sister. So I vote double.

@castilrm: We actually had 2 rolling carry-on size bags, a big backpack car seat bag (stuffed both car seats in this together), the 2 strollers, and a backpack we used as carry-on/diaper bag. The airport was definitely the toughest part but I wore the baby in the carrier, DH pushed DD1 in one stroller with the 2nd stroller resting in the basket of the first (he bungee corded the top to the handle of the stroller) and we each rolled a suitcase. We checked one suitcase and put the strollers in gate check bags for security and for gate checking.

From the airport/ferries to the apartments we stayed, we found out it worked really well to push the girls in the strollers and each hook a suitcase over one of the handles - that way we could steer the stroller with both hands. I won't say it was EASY, haha, but it wasn't too hard!

@peachykeen: how did you guys handle bags and such? We mostly will check bags but getting in/out of the airport initially and to the hotel, we’ll likely have two roller bags to drag along.

We just did this for a Europe trip with 3.5 year old and 10 month old and 2 umbrella strollers + baby carrier worked really well. It was easy to fold up one stroller (or both) if we needed to in a restaurant or to go up/down stairs. We didn't have any issues going through doorways or busy sidewalks like we would with a side-by-side double. I just used the carrier if baby wouldn't sleep in the stroller and when we visited some waterfalls.

I vote for the double stroller. One person can push the stroller while the other juggles the luggage, passports and boarding passes. Plus, less to find room for when eating out at restaurants, parking it in public spaces, etc.

Hi all! I'm traveling with my 3 year old and 10 month old next month. We'll be flying (Southwest, through moderate sized airports) and then staying in downtown Portland (so if you have any suggestions on that point, that would also be awesome to hear!) for a few days. Initially, I had thought of just bringing one stroller (with board attachment for toddler) and a carrier for baby. I'll still be bringing my carrier, but considering her weight (she's a big baby!) and the heat, I don't think I can handle wearing her for more than 30 or so minutes at a time and will need to rely more on the stroller usage. Which means toddler would be on the board while baby in stroller....the board is kind of uncomfortable for longer walks for me and her. I knock into it all the time, and she has stand basically still for the length of time that she's on it.

So at this point, I'm considering either two single strollers (husband pushing one, me pushing the other) or our double stroller (which is Mountain Buggy, so fairly compact for a double). I think both options are allowed on Southwest for gate check.

Any opinions on what would be better for airport and city explorations? The main reason I'm considering the double stroller is b/c my husband tends to be more pokey on vacations and I like to get up early and walk/explore, so I thought the double would allow me to do that more easily with the girls if he wants to sleep in. And it would be less "stuff" to drag around. But obviously double strollers are bigger and may be harder to maneuver around town than a couple of singles....

Clearly, I'm over thinking this as a way to procrastinate at work! Thanks all-
