If it were me, I'd make everyone go down for nap at 2:30pm with the goal of everyone up by 4pm. For your toddler, I'd institute quiet time. If he doesn't sleep, fine, but tell him he needs to be quiet and stay in his room/bed. Give him some books and plush toys and settle him down in a dim room and let him just calm down. If he doesn't fall asleep, then just put him to bed earlier.

@Rockies11: You must be exhausted! I am sad when I only get 30 minutes to myself. You are amazing!

Thank you for the suggestions. Good to hear what others have done and are doing. I am hesitant to wake the baby much earlier in the morning...I will start by trying to get her to bed a little earlier and see if she wakes naturally earlier on her own. I have a feeling that the morning nap is close to being dropped as well, but it feels so early compared to my boy who was forced to drop it at 15 months when I went back to work. I wouldn't care if the 2 o'clock nap was a little later... my toddler takes so long to fall asleep that it seems to be getting later and later in the day. I think he just needs a long unwinding period(like myself)... He always has energy and takes a lot to settle. The body seems to settle and then takes a long time to shut the mind off! If anyone has some experience with settling a very active toddler, please share! So many variables to consider all the time! I really appreciate hearing from all of you. Thanks for the support!

I believe I'd just let the baby drop the morning nap. That way both can have a nap around noon/1pm. Chances are that your baby's nap will be longer. My then 9 month old started daycare at that age and they only had one nap. He'd sometimes fall asleep for a short catnap in the afternoon but was mostly fine with it.

It sounds like both your kids aren't that sleepy at 2. Why not try to push back their afternoon nap to 2:30? Limit your toddler's nap to 1.5 hrs so that he's sleepy for bedtime (so wake no later than 4). I'm guessing you are getting closer to the dropping-a-nap time and that's why you are having a fights around naps. Also, keep in mind, your kids are waking up for the day relatively late (rather than 6:30-7), so there's no way they'd be ready for a nap (the toddler especially), right after lunch.

Could you move up the baby's wake up time and bedtime? Our younger lo is naturally an early riser and it really works well for us. He gets up by 6 usually and will take his first nap around 8:30 (or 8 if he wakes up before 6) and naps until 10 at the latest. Then I get my older lo down for his nap between 12:30-1:00 and younger lo goes down for his second nap at 1. They are not allowed to sleep past 3 or bedtime is a nightmare. Lo2 goes to bed between 7 and 7:30. Lo2 around 8 but often does not sleep until close to 9.

I have a 16 month old and 33 months is my other child. I would get them up earlier so you can wear them out by 11 or noon. Put them down around that time and then mine usually get a good 1-3 hour nap. I like to wake them up by 330 at very latest otherwise it's hard to get them down at night.

We are on an alternating nap schedule that really sucks - baby sleeps in carrier in the morning while I do activities with the toddler. Toddler goes down for a nap at 12 pm, sleeps until 2 pm, baby is awake the entire time. Baby goes to sleep at 2 pm, and sleeps until 4 pm. Toddler goes to bed at 8 pm, baby goes to bed at 10 pm. Toddler is up at 6 am, baby up at 8 am. The schedule is nice because I get a lot of one on one time with them, but it is absolutely exhausting.

I have an almost 3 year old and one who just turned 1 last week. The 1 year old doesn't take a morning nap (unless he catnaps in the car) which means both kids are ready for a nap around 12:30 or 1:00. I had the little one drop his morning nap earlier than I did for my first one (and maybe before he was ready), but it has been so great having both of them nap at the same time in the afternoon

If you want baby to take two naps you can wake her up earlier for the day, say 6:30/7 and then put her down for nap around 9. If she napped till 10 she should be plenty ready for a nap at 2.

I know this is probably the worst suggestion ever, because who wants to wake a baby earlier in the morning?! But it's pretty much the same schedule my 10 month old and almost 3 year old are on and it works pretty well!

But I also think @Mrs. Champagne: idea is a good one. I've definitely shortened my baby's nap at times to ensure her next nap is during my toddler's nap.

My little guy is only twelve weeks old so still taking 3-5 naps but I try to do activities and such in the morning so we can be home in the afternoon to all have a nap. I would try getting lots of stimulation and exercise in the mornings so both babies go down earlier in the afternoon!

My friend had her baby only take one quick cat nap in the morning so that al three kids could go down for nap at 1230.

Good luck!

I need some suggestions on what to do for naps with my 10 month old and 2.5 year old. My baby wakes up at 8 and I put her down for a nap at about 1030. She sometimes falls asleep right away. Other times she fights it for a little while. She usually sleeps 45-1 hour. I then try and get both of them to nap at about 2 pm. The 10 month old doesn't seem that sleepy at this time but will eventually fall asleep and wake up between 330 and 4. My toddler wakes up about 830 and we start bedtime around 830, in bed by 9. The toddler takes a long time to fall asleep (even with me lying down with him) and will usually nap up to close 2 hours...up around 430pm. Bedtime rolls around and he obviously isn't tired so it takes him over an hour to fall asleep at night as well. I know I should put him down for a nap earlier but he has problems settling down so I usually have to lie down with him for the nap, which means baby has to go down at the same time. I don't have to stay with the toddler at night when he falls asleep. So my question is, how do I figure out a good nap schedule for the two of them. Do I force the baby to drop the morning nap and they both go down shortly after lunch? How can I help my toddler settle on his own for naps? The baby's temperament is pretty good. She doesn't get fussy easily. Toddler gets cranky if he misses his afternoon nap. I think the baby would do good having a nap a little later in the afternoon but what do I do with her while I lie down with the toddler? Or do I scrap his afternoon nap? My head hurts!
