The descent is actually harder on them than taking off, so even if he is fine with takeoff, I would offer a bottle if you can during landing. I would also try a lollipop - he doesn't have to eat it, so he may have an easier time with sort of figuring that out than a food item, and the sugar should appeal to him :)

@hotchildinthecity: Will he suck on pouches? Like the Go-Go Applesauce, Plum Mash-ups or Plum Smoothies, or YoTot yogurts? We also do water from a straw cup. Bonus points if it's a real cup + real straw, keeps her more interested.

My son was much younger than yours (only 4.5 months) when I took him on a flight, and I was fully prepared to breastfeed him on takeoff and landing and COMPLETELY forgot!! He ended up being totally fine, I don't think he even noticed that we took off/landed. Again I realise the cognitive abilities of a 4.5 month old and a 2 year old are a bit different! But you may find there's no issue at all. Good luck on the flight - we're doing Sydney-Seoul then Seoul-Toronto in about 3 weeks with our now 8.5 month old and I'm DREADING it!!!

@regberadaisy: I'm going to try a lollipop but I'm not exaggerating when I say he really ears absolutely zero solids. His foster mom says he won't eat anything. We think he might have some sort of oral motor issue because when food is offered, he will hold it in his hand and make chewing motions, but not actually eat it.

@mrswin that is a good idea...he does like to just chew on his bottle (even when empty) so he might just do that.

@hotchildinthecity: what *does* he like? My nephew only recently at 31m started eating more solids. Before that it was mainly congee and rice noodle soup. Buttt he would eat fries and pocky. Anything that would encourage him to chew / suck would work. Would a lollipop work?

My 2 year old has no issues with his ears.. You may be lucky. Not sure if he'll go for it, but sucking on lollipops or swelling water helps me (who has a worse time than my toddler)

I was going to say pacifier too. Are you sure they won't let you cradle him? Try asking the stewardesses, I'm sure they'll be willing to help you. Congrats on bringing baby home!

We leave Seoul tonight for NYC and of course it's a long and brutal flight. I'm worried about J getting ear pain during takeoff. My plan was to give him a bottle but he likes (needs?) to lay down for drinking it and I'm figuring they're not going to let him lay across my lap while we're taking off.

Any other suggestions for avoiding ear pain for toddlers? He doesn't eat solids really so candy/chewing won't work.
