@sunny: I wouldn't. We went and had planned to go twice, and, though it was a good two hours or so, there isn't a ton to it. We chose not to return.

Has anyone been to the Maui Ocean Center? Is it worth it to pay extra for the 7 day pass?

EAT AT ULULANI'S SHAVE ICE AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE. it is glorious nectar from the gods and I am very upset that we only discovered it on our third-to-last-day on Maui.

Maui Revealed is a great guidebook.

If you get a chance, go eat breakfast at The Gazebo! If you don't get there early enough, you will have to wait in line. We went in December a few years ago and saw so many whales right by that restaurant. Tons breaching right off the shore. Saw more there than we did on the paid whale watching tour. And the food there is great!

@sunny: I've only stayed at Kananapali, but it's a beautiful beach! And not rocky off the shore.

I just got married in Maui in May. You are going to LOVE it! Maui is such a beautiful place. While I don't have kids yet (expecting my first in May!!!) my sister and several of my friends brought their toddlers to the wedding. We stayed in Kapalua in the Kapalua Villas (amazing!) and also in Wailea. We preferred Kapalua to Wailea. Kihei is also really nice. (If you do head to Kihei make sure to check out Kihei Cafe, they have awesome breakfasts and Coconuts, the BEST fish tacos!) Besides going to the beach & pool, I would recommend check out the Maui Ocean Centre (aquarium), the Surfing Goat Dairy farm and a luau (we went to the Old Lahaina Luau and my 1.5 year old nephew love it!) I've also heard the Sugar Cane Train is fun for kids. The road to Hana might be a bit much. Lots of driving and I know a lot of people who struggle with motion sickness due to the winding roads. Whatever you decide to do, you will have a blast! Maui is breathtaking! We can't way to go back. Have fun!

Any other suggestions on things to do in Maui with a toddler? And which area to stay in--Wailea vs Kaanapali?

@Astro Bee: Cool! We will have to check out the aquarium. I'm sure DS would love that.

@BabyTsMom: That's good to know! Thanks. I will look into it. I actually hope we don't end up using a sitter at all (always so expensive!) but I suspect DH will want to get out, especially because he will be alone with the kids 2-4 hours a day for the 5 days of my conference.

@shellio: the last time I went to Maui (before I had LO), our resort had some brochures on a nanny service that caters to tourists. I don't recall the name but I remember yelping them and they got really good reviews. I'm sure if you search nanny or babysitter on Yelp you'll be able to find them. we stayed on the Kapalua/Kaanapali side, so I'm assuming they were located on that side as well.
Good luck and have fun!

DH and I went there 6-7 yrs ago, also end January. The road to Hana was very nice, but it might be too long (approx 3 hrs each way) with young kids, and if you or thy get motion sickness, the swaying back and forth of the switchbacks may be too much. Same goes for heading up to the summit to watch the sunrise (or later in the day for hiking around the volcanic areas). We did both, and absolutely loved both experiences, so your mileage may vary. Be advised that there isn't much to do in Hana, it's more a case of the journey vs. the destination.

As @Jess1483: said, the Aquarium is not to be missed. I loved it as an adult. We did a tour of the Dole Plantation on O'ahu and loved it, but I'm sure the one on Maui is just as good. Enjoy your trip. You too, Jess1483.

@Jess1483: That sounds great! Maybe we will see you guys there :) We debated bringing one set of grandparents with us but decided against it. Two reasons - the rest of the g-parents would be jealous, and we didn't know if we could put up with any of them for that long, LOL. We have always had a great time traveling with one or now both of our kids. We just try to eliminate expectations about how many planned activities we can do, which is not the way I traveled pre-kids but now I enjoy just seeing new things with them. Enjoy!

We are headed there for two weeks in January too with DS (2). We are going with built-in babysitters (my parents, haha). I've never traveled with him before, so I've never searched for babysitters--hopefully a local can help!

As for things to do, I've been there a number of times as a kid. We are excited to take DS to the aquarium and maybe to the pineapple plantation, which we liked a lot as kids (though older than him.) We won't be doing a boat ride this trip since I'm pregnant and already prone to motion sickness, but that's definitely a fun option. We really like to go to the local farmer's markets for fresh fruits!

I'm excited to take the trip with a little one, though! Hope you have a blast!

Just wanted to add - if you have a sitter, you can contact me through my wall. I'm happy to pass on more info about myself if you or they are a little uncomfortable sharing... I've never used the wall here but I'm sure I can figure it out

We are heading to Maui for 2 weeks in January with DSs (age 1 and 3). We are all very excited! I will be attending a conference for part of the time. I'm sure we will spend tons of time at the pool and beach, but I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for other activities? We don't have high expectations for doing tons of stuff but hope to get in a couple of hikes and maybe a whale watching trip with the boys.

Also - any Maui bees have a babysitter they can put me in touch with? As of right now, DH and I don't have any plans to go out alone but I know from previous trips we've taken with the boys that it would be really nice to have the option to get out alone once or twice. I'm sure there are babysitting services but I thought it was worth asking here, too.

Thanks in advance!
