@MamaCate: I was thinking about doing a sticker chart and hoping that would help with the cleaning up of the toys as well.

@mrs. tictactoe: I like the idea of a bell. I will have to look for something that doesn't ring too loud so he doesn't wake the baby. Thanks for the suggestion!

@sooz: Thank you for the suggestions. I will try them in the mornings to burn off the energy. Daddy's turn in the evening!

How do you feel about incentives or behavior charts? Rewarding positive behavior by earning stickers toward screen time? I try to save timeout for safety issues (hitting, biting, etc) but LO doesn't get a lot of screen time and is motivated by the incentive of a Daniel tiger episode, for example.

One of the things I do to burn off energy (and God knows that my 2 yo son has a ton of energy) is have a dance party. This entertains my 8 month old and it burns off a lot of the energy that my toddler has. We jump, dance, use instruments, march...basically, anything that tires him out.

I also make a fort with sheets and chairs and we play inside the fort.

We do pretend picnics or even real in-door picnics and eat snacks on a blanket in the living room.

We'll have "wrestling" matches. This is also a good way to burn off energy.

We also do stuffed animal bowling...We line up all his stuffed animals (this takes awhile) and then use a soft ball to knock down the animals and then I make him run back to the animals and stand them up again.

It's a challenge, but I hope these help.

I have a suggestion for number 3: Since Liam started preschool, he has been much better about cleaning up. At school, they have a bell and one kid is assigned to help ring the clean up bell to tell the kids it's time to clean up. He was assigned this job at the beginning and we found a bell at home for him to use, so now if we say it's time to clean up, he will run to get the bell, ring it, yell "clean up time!" and start cleaning up his toys. It doesn't always work 100% of the time, but it's much much better than it was before.

I hope that helps!

Hello!

I need some help figuring out a few things with my toddler. I have a 2 year old and a 3 month old. The 3 month old is becoming more independent so I want to start undoing some of the bad habits/behaviours that have been created over the last few months. Most of the time things are good, but we have lacked structure and routine since the baby arrived. Bedtime has fluctuated a bit but we are getting more consistent with the time again. I need to start having a consistent wake up time for him which I will do. The other problems are listed below. Suggestions?

1) I have used the tv and the ipad for the last 3 months to try and keep my son entertained when I am busy with the baby. During the fall, we could get outside and take breaks from our indoor activities but now that it is winter we are pretty much at home, inside, all the time. Boring for him and he is not expending any energy. Suggestions as to how to cut down on screen time and burn off energy while stuck inside? I feel like all we ever see is the 4 walls of our living room.

2) Suggestions on how to get him to listen when I ask him to stop doing something? Looking for something other than a time-out. He usually doesn't listen when I am in the middle of nursing or something. Examples of behaviour I want to stop - jumping on the couch, banging on the table...

3)How do I get him to start cleaning up his toys again? He used to be good about it. We would say, time to clean up and he would. Recently if he does comply with our request he will take forever to do it so he can stall bath time or bedtime.

Thank you for any suggestions you may have!
