@periwinklebee: haha yes I will need it for the teenage years too!

---------------------
Sometimes I worry about DH commiting suicide. He was suicidal at times and depressed as a teenager. He still shows signs of depression at times and I try to help and ask him to talk to a GP or someone but no luck. A lot of it is situational triggers so I try to avoid those.

Thank you for starting this; so important to just start talking about it. Recently in the "Christian circle" a young pastor with 3 kids was lost to suicide and it is just so heartbreaking. But goes to show that no one is immune!

@lamariniere: I'm so sorry for everything that your mother went through - that must have been incredibly difficult for everyone  It is wonderful that you are able to model openness in talking about mental health and be there for your BIL. He's super lucky to have you.

Teenage years are horrifying, in so many ways. I'm desperately going to need a hellobee when LO gets there. Everyone, please keep posting for the next decade + and don't abandon ship!

@GoGoSnoGirl: I'm sorry you've seen so much tragedy. I think that, no matter how close we are to someone, and no matter how supportive we are, and sometimes despite the care they receive, we can never know someone else's demons and the depth and utter hopelessness of their despair.

@periwinklebee: I think about this too. How can we as parents let our children know that they can always come to us in times of need? I'm so fearful/anxious of the teenage years and having my kids push away from me or not feel comfortable if they need help/support.

My mother battled mental illness her entire adult life. She was in therapy, took all sorts of medications, and was closely followed by mental health specialists for decades. Although her toxicology report was inconclusive, I've always suspected she committed suicide.

I've dealt with anxiety for the past few years, and while it is nowhere near what other people go through, I try to be open when talking about my issues in the hope that other people will see that I'm not ashamed (and try to encourage them not to be either). My BIL, who is single, has been having mental health issues lately, and while the family is supportive, I don't think he's comfortable talking about it with his parents/siblings. He and I had a good one-on-one chat when we saw each other this summer where I told him about what I had been going through, and he really opened up to me about his own issues. He told me he doesn't necessarily want to seek professional help, but I gently encouraged him that he could always get help should he decide he needs it. This post is a good reminder that I should check in on him since it's been a few weeks since we were last in touch.

@GoGoSnoGirl: I'm so sorry for your losses

I agree, on a broad level talking about it reduces the stigma and we absolutely need to be working to improve access to mental health care. I also like the idea of checking in more and doing small acts of kindness for friends - it's no substitute for access to mental health care or many other things, but hopefully it has a small positive impact in one way or another.

@snarkybiochemist: thank you for sharing this & I'm sorry for the loss of your dad. :crying:

@periwinklebee: I have zero suggestions, only sympathy. Last year we lost a family member that we had no clue whatsoever would have ever considered suicide, with a brand new house & dream job prospects... It was, and still is, so raw & devastating. I also have lost a friend whom I knew was battling depression, but certainly didn't know she was suicidal, & a school friend lost her brother to suicide. It STILL baffles me, despite all these fairly close to me choosing this fate. I think we just need to keep talking about it and really check in with people in our lives. And we sure as hell need more and better access & coverage for health & mental health care, not less. 💔

@periwinklebee: I think about this all the time. For those people who show no signs of mental health issues, how can we as a society make it easy for them to reach out.

Much love to those affected

Does anybody have suggestions for things we can all do to create a more supportive environment for people who are suffering to open up and get help? A couple of days ago a cousin's husband committed suicide - he didn't have previous known mental health challenges and from what I've heard everyone close to him was blindsided - so I've been thinking a lot about what we should all be doing.

Also, I know several people whose children have committed suicide, and one of my biggest fears in life is that someday LO will be suffering and won't feel like he can come to me for help. I want to create a relationship where he knows I'll always be accepting and supportive, but tbh when I struggle I wouldn't turn to my parents, so I worry that I don't know how to do a good job of this.

Thank you so much for sharing this.   A year ago today, my husband and I were meeting with crisis workers after he attempted to overdose on pills.

It's a horrible disservice to so many people that mental illness is still treated as taboo. Posts like this help remove that. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I'm so thankful for people like you.
