I worked at Girl Scout camp giving horseback riding lessons for a summer in college, and then did lots of camp programming when I worked for them after college. I really love the camp environment and can't say enough about how awesome I think it is for kids to be outside, away from their parents. All my nieces went too and one still even goes back to be a counselor! I am totally sending my kids. Although, DH is from the west coast and thinks I'm crazy. I loved it - had so much fun, met a lot of great friends. They only allowed 1 phone call home the whole time, but my parents sent letters every week and always sent a care package. I think the whole summer would have been a totally different thing. At college I met a few kids who had gone to long summer camps and they all had really strong bonds with the other kids. It was so much fun and I think I learned so much being away. But my mom was a teacher so she had summers off, and we were broke....so....</p> <p>But I have this totally romanticized idea of summer camp. I was looking at some tonight for fun and they can be really pricy...<br /> also, the idea of my kid away at sleepover camp for 7 weeks kind of freaks me out. Realistically we will probably rely on family for summer child care, and do shorter camps.</p> <p>I kind of want to go to summer camp as an adult. </p>
