I do recommend shorts because it can help contain blowouts! In the summer my kids just usually wear a t shirt or a onesie. Gosh that makes me miss summer!

I had an august baby, and she also ran hot. We did a lot of shortsleeve and sleeveless onesies and rompers. We had a couple pairs of newborn sized footed pants that I put her in when we were going somewhere with ac, or in the evening. I didn't want to bother with socks. We had one pair of 0-3 shorts, and it was nice to have them when I wanted to dress her nice for family get togethers. She also had a couple of blousy shirts for dressing her up.

I had two June babies. In size newborn I had 3 gowns, 5-10 kimono shirts, 3-6 onesies, 2 pants, 2 light long sleeve pjs (I like separates better until the bellybutton heals), and socks.
Then in sizes 3-6 I did mostly rompers or bubbles. Cute and easy!
What you need also depends on how much time you spend in the AC!

Lots of rompers/sun suits, and lots of sundresses. I like my girls to be dressed nicely most days, even if we're not going anywhere special, so I never got on board with the 'just a onesie' trend. There are so many cute rompers and sun suits out there that function exactly the same as a onesie that it wasn't hard to find things.

DD1 and DD2 were both born in Australia where it gets pretty darn hot so all of their baby clothes are pretty much nothing but clothing for 85 degrees and warmer! :-)

I had a May baby in the South – so even hotter! She wore a lot of short sleeve onesies and rompers as well as cute newborn outfits (ex little dresses with the built in onesies). We didn't buy any shorts and I saw absolutely no point in anything longsleeved!

We swaddled her at night with the velcro swaddles, but she did not wear anything underneath them. She woke up way too hot and sweaty if we had her in a onesie underneath the swaddle. So she just wore a diaper!

@ldh112: Thanks for the list! Super helpful.

Sounds like short sleeved & sleeveless onesies are the way to go! I'll definitely make sure we have a few pairs of long-sleeved onesies and light pants to ward off any AC chill.

Thanks so much!

My son was born 8/24 in south Florida, basically THE hottest time of year. And he was a super sweaty hot baby (still is), plus had horrible reflux and was (still is) spitting up all over the place... both of these things led to us mostly just leaving him in his diaper unless we were going somewhere! We don't keep it very cold in our house so that wasn't an issue. At night/naps he was in the Swaddle Me swaddler (in just a diaper). As a newborn, he would wear those side snap kimono shirts and a diaper. For going out, just a short sleeve onesie and maybe light pants and socks (for like going to the doctor).

Whenever we were at the doctor I'd see other new babies dressed in fleece sleepers and wrapped in blankets and stuff, and my son was half naked and still soaked in sweat! LOL

Rompers and light pants with short sleeved onesies are my plan for my late May/early June baby. She will wear light sleepers at night like my first did since we use our AC a lot and it gets cold inside.

I had a June newborn and she wore a lot of short sleeve and sleeveless onesies, little dresses (just basic cotton types, nothing fancy!) and rompers. I don't think we had any shots and she didn't wear pants too often. Mostly just chilled in a onesie!

DD was born June 4th and it was in the 90's-100's pretty much all summer where we lived. We didn't have an AC it was miserable. She spent a lot of time just chilling in her diaper. We also used a lot of the little newborn t-shirts and she'd just wear that and her diaper most days while we were home. Lots of little dresses and shorts if we left the house. A&A swaddle blankets worked wonderfully for night time.

My DDs (early May and late June) mostly wore short sleeve onesies or little rompers (basically like a onesie with little shorts legs attached) when I wanted them to be more "dressed up". At night (or if we were going somewhere cold) they just wore long sleeve/long leg pajamas.

For my first daughter, I had a lot of little dress/diaper cover outfits, but I realized that until a child can sit up on their own, dresses tend to just look rumpled and scrunched up. They aren't (in my opinion) very cute on - I had way too many and never put them on her.

My DD was born in early September...she lived in the side snap short sleeve ts early on (just those and a diaper). She also wore just short sleeve onsies. I think I bought a 5 pack of each. She was not a spitter upper and we did not suffer many blowouts...

I live in the South and had an August baby. Aside from not getting jackets, etc, I bought the standard stuff. I actually think it's a little cooler (at least in the South) during the summer when you are indoors. We had the AC going and if anything I worried about him getting a chill, not overheating. Baby is supposed to wear what you are comfortable in + one layer. I didn't need long-sleeved onesies or anything, but he definitely wore sleepers and even pants.

ETA: He did run hot at night, though, so he just slept in a short sleeved onesie + swaddle.

My daughter was a May baby! We did lots of onesies and rompers. A few pants or long-sleeved items are good in case you spend any time in the sun (since sunscreen isn't recommend). We did long-sleeved zip-up footie PJs with a SwaddleMe at night, but we had AC and kept the room cool.

My daughter was born in late June last year! We mainly did short sleeved onesies, leggings, and socks. Sometimes just a onesie and socks at home but definitely added leggings if we went out anywhere. I never used long-sleeves or footed PJs for sleeping. Rompers and outfits were cute, but I rarely used them for her and wish I hadn't even bought that kind of stuff or kept any from showers. She just looked silly in outfits as a newborn!

I'd say for 0-3 months to have 10 or so short sleeved onesies, 3-6 leggings, a few pairs of socks. It just depends on how often you do laundry (or want to do laundry, ha!). For NB sizes, I'd maybe do 2-4 onesies, 2-3 leggings to start because you never know how long they will be in NB.

I'm due in May and I'm expecting the usual hot, humid northeast summer!

I'm planning on buying some short sleeved onesies for sure. I'm also hoping to try swaddling baby girl at night, so that adds an extra layer in the evenings.

Other than that, what would you recommend keeping in stock for a summer baby, and how many of each? Long-sleeved onesies? Pants? Shorts? (Is there even a point to newborn shorts?)

Many thanks for sharing your experience!
