The strap is adjustable and hooks with a plastic thing. The front is a little stiff so it doesn't flop in his face, and the size is adjustable with a cord. It stays on well, because of the elastic + chin tie, and the brim is stiffer than the wide-brim floppy style they have. The neck flap provides great sun coverage, too.</p> <p>I personally don't think they're the cutest hats in the world, but so practical! I have one from Target with straps that velcro, but the velcro is so loose that it comes apart as soon as she pulls on it. I created a monster by playing games inside where I put something on my head or her head and let it fall-- now she thinks everything that is placed on her head is to be taken off immediately. Oops. </p>
