I have this in pink and purple for both girls. It's a very wide brim and pricey. But the head is adjustable so it grows with them. There's a mesh on the head so it allows their head to breathe. It's not the most fashionable but it has SPF 30 and does a great job of keeping the sun off their eyes!

@Foodnerd81: hmm I find them to be pretty crisp and breathable!!! DD loves them and will keep it on all day. Yes her head does get a little sweaty but not too bad. We live in southern ca so lots of sunshine and playing outside!!!

I haven't tried it at the beach yet, but I got my LO (10 month old, tons of hair, 99th percentile head) one of the hanna andersson "swimmy hats" that's made out of swimsuit-type material. It seems like the same material as sweat-wicking workout clothes, so hopefully it won't be too hot! We got the size medium (for 2-6 yrs! for my 10mo.) and he has a little room to grow, but it's not too outrageously large.

I love the weight of the iPlay. I would play around and try to find the right size.

We use the urban baby bonnets and they are great!! A little pricey but since they are reversible it's like getting two hats for the price of one!

@Foodnerd81: I got the infant size and it fits our LO who has always had a head in the 90 something percentile. My main concern was getting something with good coverage that he couldn't pull off!

@jhd: I got her a brimmed iplay hat and its HUGE. She has a big head (95%) and it was ridiculous. Amazon let me keep it when I tried to return it but I felt like the infant size would be too small. Maybe her head grew in the last few months...

C is almost two, and has generally been pretty good about leaving her hat on when we are out in the sun. But lately it's been warm and humid and her head sweats so much, I can't blame her for trying to take it off a lot now. She has fair, very fine hair so she needs something to protect her scalp, so it's a hat or smearing her whole head in sunscreen.

Can anyone recommend a hat that breaths better but still protects from the sun? I wear a visor but my hair actually covers my scalp.

Her current hat is a wallaroo kids hat that is lined in terry cloth- she actually really likes the hat but just gets too hot. I prefer a chin strap to help remind her to leave it on and help with wind.

Eta: we have a pink version of this one.
