@Cyneswith: Gotcha re beach versus lake/creek. Yeah, carrying an umbrella out in the water with you is probably not a practical option/solution. That just stinks that you can't enjoy yourself and cool off in the water! I have had 2 bad burns in my life, one of which I got while swimming at the beach (I had a few blisters on my shoulders and under my chin - definitely no fun). ((Hugs))

@MsLipGloss: Indeed. Most of my sunburns have been from swimming (all but one that I remember, in fact. Out of water, I seek shade instead of doing the very 8-year-old thing and going "but I wanna swim! I won't burn that bad!" All my other swimming over the past 10 years has either been at night or in shady creeks, because I really do know better.) It just prevents an umbrella or tent from being much use.

Swimming is worse than direct sun in so many ways, i.e., reflection off the water (parts of your body normally shaded get exposed to the sun = more surface area of your skin is burned), and not feeling the burn due to the constant cooling of the water. Not to mention that being in the water increases the frequency at which you should apply sunscreen. This sounds like a pretty severe sunburn - I hope you feel better soon.

@travelingbrit: No, but I was swimming the whole time. I know better than to be in direct sunlight for more than 5 minutes at a time (I get a normal person's pink and itchy burn in 10 minutes), but I was desperate to swim, and there are no pools around here. We're three hours from the beach, too. As a midwestern girl who has always had creeks, lakes, and pools to choose from, it's bizarre to me.

Yes, being pregnant would change my approach. I agree with the previous posters to call you OB's office and let them know what you're experiencing. I'm so sorry you feel terrible (owwwwwie!) - make sure you are staying hydrated and really watch your light-headedness--you don't want to risk falling!

You sound exactly like me! I am so white I am see through in places.

I wouldn't worry too much about this instance but I'd try to avoid the sun for the rest of your pg.

Personally, I can't stay out at the beach....my tolerance to heat has gone way down.

Do you have a beach umbrella or beach tent for shade?

I would call your OB in the morning to let them know what's going on and see what they say. And I probably would not return to the beach except for very short periods of time. I have found I'm much more sensitive to the sun since becoming pregnant so I limit exposure as much as possible.

Yikes! Have you talked to your OB to make sure it's ok?
I'm not a fan of the sun and avoid it as much as possible. I would try to stay out of the sun if I were you.. at least until your baby's born.. ?

Went to the beach on Saturday, and got sunburned from the bases of my fingers up to my scalp (thankfully, I wore a tank top and pants). The skin around the neckline of my shirt is swollen, bumpy, and sore to the bone. I have blistered patches on my shoulders, each about the size of my palm. I had a fever/chills for a few days (still have to wear socks, or my teeth start chattering), along with nausea and vomiting (morning sickness and sun-related nausea feel very different to me). I had a mild headache for a few days, and a few instances of feeling faint, particularly the day of (I've never actually fainted, though, so I don't know if that is 100% accurate.) I was a little dizzy, though I've also been dizzy off and on the past few months. Basically, I had/am recovering from textbook sun poisoning.

I haven't sought medical attention because this is, to me, a normal sunburn. (For the record, I'm so white I'm transparent - really, you can follow arteries from above my elbow to halfway up my hand at a glance.) I've been through sun poisoning about a dozen times. But... I'm pregnant. Would that change your approach in this situation? I do plan to go back to the beach while I'm pregnant (though with an oversized t-shirt and heavy duty waterproof sunscreen), but knowing me, it could be just as bad if it were actually sunny the whole time.

ETA: And yes, skin cancer is common in my family, despite the fact that we never tan, rarely bare our shoulders outdoors, and are pretty good about sunscreen and seeking shade. I REALLY hope our kids get their skin from their daddy.
