I have been using the Babyganics non-aerosol spray for years at the daycare and they have no problem with it. That's super annoying.

@Mrs D: i think it sounds like a miscommunication. Because most people.i know use aerosol interchangeably with spray.

We have the same rule and I just assume no spray of any kind. But in general I agree, good sunscreen is expensive!

@Mrs D: I think the article is saying they aren't safe to inhale? I imagine the ingredients that protect our skin from the sun aren't really meant to be coating the lungs? That's my guess. My kids have asthma and allergies, so I know I wouldn't want them accidentally inhaling another kids' sunscreen spray. But definitely agree that they should have communicated this better! Just say "no sprays" or "lotion/creams only!"

Our daycare has everyone provide the same sunscreen so they can use the same lotion on all the kids which makes it easier on the teachers rather than having different lotions for each kid (Walmart brand baby spf 50). Makes it so easy!

@Adira: Ugh...was such a frustrating discussion. I totally get it if they are worried about another child inhaling some trace remnants in the air...I just wish my daycare could figure out a normal way to communicate and address parents concerns...

I'm not sure I buy in to all spray sunscreens as unsafe as the article presents...especially good quality sunscreens made from safe/safer ingredients...

Our daycare did the opposite for bug spray and said in all comms that only lotion-based anti-bug stuff is allowed (which doesn't even exist beyond 1-2 brands that I had to scour for on Amazon), and then it turned out that non-aerosol sprays are OK, just not aerosol because of the potential of aerosol to explode (which isn't even a thing these days). So yeah, I feel you, and no, it's not implied that non-aerosol equals no spray at all.

Being clear would have been nice because even without expedited shipping sunscreen is expensive. Our daycare provides the sunscreen.

I totally agree that they should have worded their request better, and that totally sucks that you went out of your way to find something you thought would meet their requirements only to find out it's not what they meant. I'm sorry!! That's so frustrating!

BUT, yes, spray sunscreens, including non-aerosol ones, can trigger asthma.

Maybe someone out there is an expert and can shed some light on this for me. Our daycare sent around info last week requesting parent send in sunscreen for their kiddos as they have started going outside more frequently. The mailing indicated we could not bring in Aerosol sunscreen.

I went in this morning with a face stick and non aerosol spray for my girls...I was told I could not leave the spray. I told them it was non aerosol and they said "oh well its still not ok". When I questioned her further she said it could cause asthma issues. Is this accurate?

I told them they should really be more clear with communication...that non aerosol actually means nothing with a spray. (She was dumb, and followed on with "well generally people who read non aerosol understand that means no spray"...UM no...I interpret what your saying as what you mean, not some other WRONG interpretation) I went out of my way to find the combination I thought would be easiest for the teachers (stick for face and spray for arms and legs) and now I have way more spray than I need...and have to pay expedited shipping on the lotion I dont have. I'm just annoyed...and venting...and its monday...bleh...
