Any recommendations for a spray sunscreen/block that can be used on the scalp? I'm a bit nervous about aerosols but we would be spraying outdoors. Ive heard there are other mineral based sprays that are a bit thinner. Any suggestions?

@wonderstruck and @2peasinapod - DD has always hated things on her head. I can't get a headband or barrette in her hair for anything. The hat stays on for a few minutes but usually gets thrown off along w a fit if I try to out it back on. And the reason I posted the question was more because I'm not going to put the hat on/off everytime she goes outside. She's pretty independent so I don't always know right away when she ventures out into the yard.

@2PeasinaPod: I just don't understand why hats are so sad! Sigh. We also get this at bath time - the sitting there sobbing until it's over.

@allison: Thanks for the tips...but my situation is similar to @wonderstruck...he will just sit there and sob his little heart out. It's easier to put sunblock on his head!

@allison: It sucks! I think kids logic/reasoning skills need to come into play MUCH earlier than it actually happens, haha. I figure that by next summer it will be easier because I can just tell him, "Well, if you want to play outside you have to wear a hat. If you won't put it on then I'm sorry, but we're staying inside." But since the only words my 12 month old understands are dada, mama, bottle, and no, I'm not sure it would have the desired effect, haha.

@allison: In my case, when/if he finally gives up he just sits there and sobs. It's pretty pathetic but also heartbreaking! It's so weird because he never minded his winter hat, but thinks sun hats are evil. If I can find a sunscreen that would work just as well, this isn't something I'm going to fight him on - we just end up back inside because he's so upset, and that's no fun for anyone. I'm not looking to turn it into an unnecessary power struggle, I just don't want his scalp to be burnt.

@wonderstruck: @2PeasinaPod: I nannied for a kid once that absolutely despised wearing hats. I would just have to sit right next to him for the first 10 or so minutes of being outside. When he would go to take the hat off, I would tell him "no, please leave your hat on". Also, block his hand from removing the hat. If he did get the hat off, I would immediately put it back on. He eventually gave up. And got better about it as he got older (I nannied for him from 6 weeks to 18 months). I think it's really key to be consistent. If they know you'll eventually give up, they persist! Same thing with sunglasses.

I wish I could understand how you just make a hat mandatory! I feel like all our outdoor time is a struggle - I put the hat on LO, who screams and pulls away from it the whole time, then he immediately rips it off his head and throws it on the ground. Rinse and repeat. And he's only 12 months, so I can't really reason with about it!

I spray her with sunscreen or she wears a hat. Sometimes i do both because I know she will whip it off as soon as she can. I use a spray because it's just easier/less traumatizing than slathering her scalp down. if i can distract her from the hat, that's one thing, but at some point, she realizes it's there and is like, I MUST THROW THIS.

Ain't nothing hurts like a scalp burn. NOTHING

Yeah DD isn't great about wearing hats. But also, on days she's at home w grandma she's in and out of the house a lot. I'd rather put some sunscreen on her so I don't really have to worry about
It.

@allison: the weird thing with my LO is that he was fine all winter with the winter hats. So i wonder if it has to do with the texture and the winter hats feel better on his head? who knows. i am on the hunt for softer, but not thick late blankets, summer hats!

I find that being firm about hat wearing (and using one that ties under the chin) works well for us. He stopped trying to take it off and just accepted that it was a reality after awhile!

I have been wondering the same exact thing. Her hair is really fine, but getting a little bit longish so if I put regular sunscreen on it it would be grease city. So far she usually will keep a hat on if I distract her but I think that's going to change.

I only worried about it on days when we would be out in the sun for periods of time (beach, pool, park) and I couldn't guarantee that she would keep at hat on 100% of the time. I had to just get a spray sunscreen that I could use on her head.

Another sunscreen question....

LO is very fair with white blonde hair. It's not always possible to have a hat on her on sunny days when she's running in/out of the house constantly. Do you put sunscreen on LO's scalp or hair? What kind of product do you use?
