On a sleep consultants blog that I visit frequently it says that basically ( in a nutshell)
-more sleep time during the day = more sleep time at night
- an earlier bedtime does not mean an earlier awake time
- to put your baby to bed no later then 4 hours after they wake up from their last nap

B was going to bed at 7pm but was waking frequently during the night. I moved her bedtime to 630 ( which I thought was crazy early ) and now she sleeps from 630-5ish when she wakes for a diaper change as she's typically soaked through at this point. Then she goes back to sleep until around 8, sometimes 9. She's been doing that since we changed her schedule about a month ago.

Anyways, there's lots of really useful information on her blog and facebook page. The website is weebeedreaming.com :)

So we have been trying to move to 2 naps and longer awake time before bed (~4hrs) and nights seem to be going better

He did one miracle 1.5hour nap on Saturday, but on Sunday he only took 2 45min naps and was kinda cranky during the day. So we ended up doing a catnap in the carrier to get him through to bedtime... With these short naps there is just too much time in the day for 2 naps to get him through. Will being consistently on 2 naps help him to nap longer?

@meredithNYC: @BabyBruins: @LBee: I think we'll give 2 naps a shot this weekend. If it goes ok, maybe it will help with daycare naps too - I can ask them to put him down at 9 and at 1.

@CakeLady: my 7 moth old didn't sleep AT ALL yesterday, got shots in the afternoon and slept all night. We are currently 20 minutes into crying for our first nap.
We are down to 2 naps and whatever he catches in a car or carrier while doing big brother's stuff.

@CakeLady: I can't totally remember but she was on a 9am and 1/2pm nap for the lonnngggest time. Sometimes, though, she'd go down at like 3 and be sleeping when DH went to pick her up at 4.

I'm thinking you may be on to something with the 2 nap thing. We have also noticed that if we let him go to town in the jumperoo and then have a bunch of tummy time before bed that he tends to sleep much better.

Yesterday DS didn't nap after 12:10pm at daycare. (Why do they think it is ok for a 7 month old to say awake so long?) He was a basket case when I picked him up at 5:45. We did a shortened evening routine and got him to bed 20 minutes early (at 7:10) and he STTN! He stirred and fussed for just a few minutes at 1 am and 3:30 am when he usually wakes up, instead he fell back to sleep.

I definitely would not try this again in hopes of him sleeping all night because he was not a happy camper while he was awake. BUT, what I'm wondering is:
Would more awake time before bed help him sleep better at night? He is usually up between 2-3.5 hours now.
Or would going from 3 naps to 2 help? He tends to take short naps now...
