Thanks for the reassurance, gals! I kept reading in every book/article/etc. that the first appointment is the longest and would be bursting at the seams with info. I'm overweight (technically obese, I think... ha!) so I thought she would go over healthy weight gain or SOMETHING like that.

Oh well, now it's time to schedule these appointments and hopefully see something on an U/S!

My first OB appointment was longer than the subsequent ones. She did a pelvic exam, pap smear, and then went over a list of Dos and donts. then she explained about some upcoming tests and then asked us if we had any questions. we had a lot of questions so that might be why it was a long appointment.

since i'm carrying twins, my ob does an u/s at all appointments. so i had it done on my first appointment. she did set aside time for me to give me a pamplet with all the dos and don'ts and what not. and she summarized some stuff for me. and what to expect with some tests coming up (like the nt scan and complete ultrasound, etc.)

Mine first OB appt isn't for another 2 weeks, but the receptionist told me it would take 1.5 hours and that it would be with a nurse. I then go a week later for a half hour appt with a midwife. I honestly don't know what all will happen at either though. They did make me do a blood test at their lab to confirm pregnancy before scheduling any appointments, so I guess that was their assurance that something was really in there?

Hm, I had a totally different experience. I actually had a "first visit" twice; once in my old town with my old OB, and once a little later in my pregnancy with my current OB after we moved. Both doctors took us into their office first to sit down and look over our history and just answer any questions we had. Then, they took us into the room to do an exam and check my UT growth. Both 1st appts took probably close to an hour.

Mine all go super quick, I'm hoping they start to take longer now that I'm entering the 3rd trimester. just for my peace of mind.

Yeah, totally normal. My first appt was when I was 5 weeks pregnant and my OB told me that before we get down to the nittygritty, she needed my first u/s done to ensure that there really is something growing. Sounded harsh at the time but I suppose it makes sense.

My first one was with my family doctor, he just ordered some bloodwork, and an early dating ultrasound (I have a history of whacked out cycles). He congratulated us, wrote me a prescription for my MS, asked if we had ay questions and sent me on my way. However, my family doctor knows me from work (I am an NICU at the hospital, so I run into him from time to time), and he figured I would know the do's and don'ts from my nursing education (which I did).

Mine was over an hour. Lots of do's and don't's. However, I have a midwife and not an OB, so she's more about creating a connection than just being my physician.

Sounds about like mine. We did get a few pamphlets to read through, but not a whole lot of counseling since I really didn't have any questions.

It sounds fairly normal to me. With my first OB, if I hadn't had complications, my first u/s would have been if I opted into an NT scan. I think its typical not to check for heartbeat until later too. With my first OB they checked with the doppler at an 11 week appointment. Now with my current pregnancy/OB I got lucky and they do an early u/s, (which isn't the norm for the area) but again, they didn't check for a heartbeat with the doppler until about week 10-ish. We barely found it at that point and its even harder to find earlier on so I think that's why they tend to wait until you're a little further along.

I'm a bit surprised they didn't go through the list of do's and don'ts, but it could just be your Dr.'s style that they assume all is well unless you ask?

Congrats on your pregnancy, hopefully they're a little more personable at your future appointments. Its a bit of a bummer when you're so excited about something and you feel as if they're brushing it off. :(

I was only 5 weeks and I got an ultrasound just to be sure there was something in there. And by 8 weeks the doctor definitely checked for a heartbeat so I do find that a bit strange. He didn't give me any do's and don'ts though so that was disappointing.

Sooo I just got back from my first prenantal appt. Hubs came with me, we got there, signed in, waited a bit. Then we were called into the back, I got weighed and gave a urine sample, the nurse too my blood pressure and went over my paperwork.

The dr. came in and did a quick pelvic exam, then I was asked if we had any questions. We didn't (I know, bad of us), so we were sent on our way with three appointments to make (1st U/S, 1st trimester screening, and blood work), with a follow up appt at the OB's office next month.

So, no extensive chat, no "dos and don'ts," none of that. I appreciate that our time wasn't wasted, but I guess I thought more was going to happen during our first visit?

Did anyone else have a similar experience? The dr. didn't even try to listen for a heartbeat because I'm really in the early stages (only 8 weeks). I guess we were hoping to get SOME sort of reassurance that something was in there.
