Following this. In the last couple of days LO (9mo) suddenly has a huge mommy preference. She cries if I leave the room when DH or my mom has her. I'm hoping she's just out of sorts from teething and she'll go back (she normally LOVES Daddy), but who knows?

Between my twin boys (20mo), E has always preferred mommy while the other (I) prefers daddy. We've noticed that they will more readily go to the less preferred parent nowadays. We made conscious efforts to do one-on-one things with the kid that preferred us less. So DH would take E on a Costco run while I would take the other to Target. We also take turns going out during dinner/bedtime so they are spending time with one of us. Not sure if those things solely helped. Or if it just was a phase that, over time, faded. But nowadays, while they still have their distinct parent preferences, they'll more readily go to the other for a hug etc

Same in our house. At 2 my LO still has a pretty strong mommy presence but it is better now than at 1. I feel like the thing that helps the most is time alone with her and him. But to some extent I think toddlers having a mommy preference is normal and you can't really fight it.

I solo parent a large percentage of the time. So my kiddos have a huge momma preference. It bums DH out pretty bad. I am hoping we can balance things back out soon.

We have been going through this for a while. It ebbs and flows but it's always mommy. And like you say, once I'm gone she's ok with him but if I'm home, she wants me. It has gotten much worse since we had our second baby. I try to make sure that I have enough good one on one time with her and that DH does fun things with her when he's home (I sah so she spends way more time with me but often my attention is divided between her and the baby). She's definitely getting better, but just today, my sister was visiting so LO played with her most of the day, even though I was right there. Then when DH came home she was suddenly clingy to me, I think because she had less mommy time during the day?

It sucks all around.

We had the same problem because I am a SAHM. I would just take some personal time when DH was off and he would take her to do something extra fun- a long trip to the park, Bounce and Play, watch an awesome movie. She is now 2.5 and she now just changes her parent preference depending on the day (except when she is sick or hurt when she always wants mommy).

We are in the same boat! But DH spends considerably more time with her at home than me, so I think he's fine. He is always saying that when I'm around it's like he doesn't exist, lol! Poor guy.

I would just make sure he's fully engaged, sitting on the floor playing with her, etc. I'd totally take up the opportunity to take an extra long shower, or do something out of sight!

Right now we are dealing with a crazy strong mommy preference, to the point that I can tell DH is getting sad, i think he doesn't feel as connected to our 1 year old as he does our older daughter (because of this.) How do you encourage a young child to spend more time with the less-favored parent? I want her to spend time with him when i'm home, she's fine when i'm gone and he's home with her. it is when we are all home that she will only be by me.
