My little dude was failure to thrive at 6 months old and still struggles with weight gain. We did do a supplement (neocate splash for food allergies) for a long time. Then we switch to kids boost which was great and significantly cheaper. We also worked to hide the added fats. So cream in Mac and cheese instead if regular milk. And I know people who eat coconut oil so you can do that. He won't touch avocado with a. Ten food pole. But he loves sunflower seed butter and I would make tuna with mayo. Hummus with olive oil was also a hit.

He is now 2 1/2 and in the 10th percentile in weight and is 26 #. We don't do any supplementation(haven't since his birthday) and he is doing just fine.

@mamimami: obviously I'm not a pediatrician and you should listen to yours if you trust them. :)

But I know plenty of similar age kids that are just little peanuts but are perfectly healthy.

My LO has an iron problem so we've made it our mission to include iron a part of her daily diet ate each meal. She can be picky as well. So I take cues from her favorite foods to sneak in iron. Ie she hates leafy greens but I have found she likes quiche. So I would make mini quiche and put spinach and broccoli in it. She gobbles it down! She is a carb fiend so if anything is remotely like carbs she eats it. So I make waffles, pancakes, muffins solely with buckwheat, oat flour and sometimes wheat flour, etc.

My LO loves green smoothies and she'll drink those even when I put avocados in. Does yours like fish? Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, trout etc. Although we limit fish to once weekly. If she likes bread what about bread with a homemade olive oil, garlic and herb dip?

I would take cues from things you know she loves and think about how you can incorporate healthy fats into it! We moms have be sneaky when it comes to their diet! ;)

@mamimami: hahaha, I feel the same way! It's crazy how much kids are different. DD has a friend at one of our playgroups who is the same height as her, but he weighs 15 pounds more! When you see them side by side, they look similarly proportioned, but he is considered overweight and she is considered underweight. I honestly don't know how two kids who look so similar in size can differ that much in weight, but there you go!

I do think DD went through a picky eating phase around 12-18 months, as well. For a while, all she would eat was cold pasta (:/) but eventually that passed, and now at 3.5 she is a pretty good eater. Hopefully your DD will turn around her eating, too. :)

@Honeybee: Thanks, that makes me feel better. She is happy and seems very healthy although I do worry a bit about her diet. It IS hard for me to imagine she is receiving enough nutrition from the little she is willing to eat. Maybe I can work on that and get to a point where I'm satisfied with her food intake/variety even if she doesn't gain much, and like you, drop the supplement. The pediatrician prescribed it for only three months and in about half the amount that is usually given.

It boggles my mind that someone in my gene pool would even have trouble gaining weight LOL.

My daughter was never high for weight, but between her 9 and 12 month appointments, she dropped from around the 40th to about the 10th percentile. Our doctor suggested that we could give her a supplement instead of milk (she wasn't drinking much milk anyway). We gtave her PediaSure daily, but her weight never picked up again. She didn't even weigh 20 lbs until she was over two years old! She's continued to grow in height, though, and has maintained her 70-75th percentile there, so eventually we just stopped worrying about it and stopped supplementing. DS also dropped weight percentiles once he started walking, but our new doctor isn't too concerned. He says as long as DS continues tracking on height, it shows he is still growing, and therefore, is getting enough nutrients in his daily food. DS has continued to be in the 70th-80th percentile for height, even though his weight is in the 10th-15th percentiles, so we figure he's fine.

My good friend Mrs. Jacks says not to worry too much about weight growth, as long as your LO is still tracking in one growth category. I agree with her that every kid is different, and as long your LO shows some growth, dropping percentiles in weight shouldn't be too much of a concern. Especially around the time kids start walking, a lot of them seem to suddenly thin out.

@locavore_mama: At 13 months she weighs about 18.5 lbs. Her head and height are consistently in the 50th/75th percentile range and her weight was too, for the first 5 months or so, then it started a downward creep and sort of plummeted around 12 months. When she was sick she just sort of stopped eating solids. She actually has gained a couple of pounds in the last month now that she's feeling better.

No, she didn't suggest using any other fats. This is probably a stupid question but is there any other way to give them to her rather than hoping she'll eat them? She doesn't seem to like avocado. Even bread with butter and jam today... she wouldn't touch it. She's very picky :(

ETA what I mean is can I give her oil or something like a medicine? With a dropper?

What are her stats? Has your pediatrician suggested giving healthy fats first versus a supplement?

Has anyone had to give a supplement to a toddler (not formula, like a weight gain supplement)? My 13-month-old is at the 10th percentile for weight now after a recent illness. That would not be a problem if she had always been petite but she's been declining slightly and then when she got sick she just dropped off. She's not a very good eater.

Anyway, the pediatrician told me to give her Fortini. Haven't bought it yet. Anyone have experience with this situation?

My little string bean :(
