Update: Today was our 6mo checkup. Our ped said that he is getting enough breast milk and we should be ok to drop a bottle or two per week in another couple of months. Phew! He is a maniac for food, and she said that as long as he's getting 20-25oz per day of breast milk AND getting plenty of calories through solids that it's not a big deal.

This is a good question for your doctor, as they know your child's growth history, and can help make a decision for your specific family.

Our doctor told us that food should not take the place of any feedings (breast milk or formula) before 1 year. Because BM and formula are so nutrient rich, and formulated for an infant, they should be the primary source of calories and nutrition. Our LO eats a lot, too, but she still gladly takes all of her bottles each day.

We give breast milk and supplement, too. I was hoping the calories from food would help us kick the formula, but we were advised not to. :(

So, if my current trend continues, my freezer stash will be gone in about 6 weeks when my son is 7.5 months old. I am short about one 4.5-oz bottle per week.

We introduced solids at 5 months, and he is a serious eater. I am not worried about his calorie intake.

Under those circumstances, do I need to supplement with formula if it is only one or two bottles per week? Or can he get his nutritional needs met through other foods?
