@SLR: I found nothing boosts my breastmilk production more than long-simmered beef soups, like braised oxtail or pho or basically any kind of sticky bone broth with fatty beef in it. Something about the fat, iron, collagen, and gelatin makes my breastmilk kick in within a day or two. Super helpful, since it hits the spot when I'm sick anyway!

@Pollywog: I can't do fenugreek! Wish I could but it hurts my stomach. I will be eating oats for breakfast all week though. And luckily I still have a bag of lactation cookies in the freezer!

@MrsSRS: I hadn't heard avocado before. Will give that a try!

Scraping by so far with by giving her two 5 oz bottles (vs her usual 15oz a day) while she is in daycare and filling her up with solids. I think we'll get by but picked up a pack of the little RTF bottles to send just in case.

Mixed it with breastmilk and quickly moved to all formula. We used Similac Total Comfort and he did great with it.

Gerber Gentle RTF went over well with DS1. DS2 is not picky. Both like their formula warm.

First of all, I'm so sorry. I know how stressful this is. Second, get a bottle of fenugreek and some oatmeal (rolled oats). Take 3 pills 3 times a day and eat two bowls of oatmeal. Pump every 2 hours and nurse as much as possible when you're home. Your supply will be back up in 2-3 days. I went from 6 ounces to 13 in 2 days.

As far as supplementing, my kid can't have formula, but I was told not to mix formula and breastmilk because then you'll have to toss the breastmilk in an hour.

FWIW what helped my supply bounce back after viruses was, specifically, gatorade and avocado. Good luck!

My LO always preferred the RTF formula versus powdered though we were able to get her onto powdered with the Dr. Brown's pitcher that mixes it up with fewer clumps and bubbles than a shaken up bottle.

Temperature was never an issue for her but she took bottles & formula from her first week.

I hope your supply bounces back soon!

We combo feed (less formula now bc of her milk allergy), so she started getting formula a few days old. I've heard that the ready to feed stuff is more palatable and that's what we started with because that's what the hospital had (RTF Similac sensitive) We then moved to the powder at a week or two. We usually keep it room temp to help her differentiate from nursing.

Thanks everyone! I'll probably run out and get some of the Similac for Supplementation just in case I need to try that. I've pumped three times so far today and have gotten only 6oz. :bummed:

I had to supplement when DD WAS 6 months; I never mixed and just cold turkey started some formula bottles (I did not want to waste what little precious bm I had left), and she took it fine! We were on Gerber gentle ease... I would have wanted to do Similac, but I didn't want to change what was working!

We started with Similac for supplementation (very, very early), and mixed it with breastmilk every time. After a month, we switched to an organic formula, and would give it to her straight.

I hope you're able to get your supply back up - I know how stressful that is. But just know that she will be ok on the formula too. It wouldn't hurt to add a powdered probiotic after the illness and formula. Klaire Labs makes an amazing infant probiotic.

I agree with @T.H.O.U.: ...she'll take it eventually.

I never did the 50/50 always just straight to formula and my girls took it fine.

we mixed 50/50 with Earths Best/BM and he eventually took it.... my first just took the formula right away without any mixing... agree with THOU, if she's hungry enough she'll eat.

We tried one or two bottles where it was mixed 50-50, and he did great. So we tried 100% formula and he did well with that too. It helped to have it really warmed up, even more than we warm up breast milk.

Another idea sometimes I have had issues if I let frozen milk thaw in the fridge overnight, like it is supposed to, but LO drinks it more readily if I thaw it in a bath of warm water quickly.

My EBF 8 month old had a stomach virus on Friday night and then I got it yesterday. It has killed my supply! I had to dip into my milk for daycare this week and barely had enough for her bottles today.

I tried giving her frozen milk last night and she wouldn't take it (the lipase thing, I presume). So, I made up a bottle of a sample can of formula that I had here. She gagged and refused that as well.

I know my supply should pick back up one I get back to eating and drinking normally, but any tips on how to manage in the short-term?

I asked daycare to only give 2 bottles today (if possible) and fill her up with solids to give me at least one bottle for tomorrow. I have a feeling that I'm not going to get enough for her though.

Has anyone had luck going cold turkey with supplementing (vs. mixing w/ breastmilk and increasing)? Any suggested formulas that may taste most like breastmilk?
