I think I will give the Poly V a try and report back how it goes for me. Because I am seing the same thing online abut how babies after 6 months done get enough iron, and they dont eat enough solids to make up for that

@cvbee: you can always add the drops to their milk or to water. Everyone says how the babies had the Di-Vi-sol too and I tasted it and its kinda bitter but my baby loves it and drinks it like its the yummiest thing ever. She prefers the vitamin D drops to the fruit flavored fever reducers out there. SO you just never know

@cvbee: I feel squeamish about giving my baby supplements so I might just try iron-rich foods anyway. I figure if he's eating 100% veggies and fruits it can't be that hard. Oh, well we have given him meat a few times.

@Coco Bee: @Mrsbells: @Baby Boy Mom: @sorrycharlie: I see I'm a bit late but thought I'd chime in.

My doc said we need D drops for the winter (we're in CAnada) and to start iron-rich foods at 6 months, because up to 6 months BFing is fine with no iron, but that the store of iron that they are born with runs out at around 6 months and BFing does NOT provide enough iron. The iron is really the only additional thing toBFing that babies needs starting at 6 months, and you can get it through foods.

But I'm a cautious person, so I picked up the poly-V-sol vitamins that y'all were talking about too, but then before giving them to him I read about them on the internet and it sounds like most babies HATE them, so I'm going to return them. Now I'm on the fence about getting him just more plain d-drops or making sure we eat enough iron. I'm thinking maybe just food.

Since you are BF I don't think it's necessary. Our first ped recommended it but also assumed we were feeding formula. Then when we changed to a pro-BF doc he said it's not really necessary.

@sorrycharlie: yeah thats the one poly-vi-sol I think its called. I just cant decide if I should buy it or not or just buy more vitamin D. Which brand did Mrs bee recommend? My LO likes the D-vi-sol so we have no problems with it

@Coco Bee: mainly breastfed but she gets about 4oz of formula a day in addition to breast milk

Are you still EBF? My pediatrician told me babies don't need iron if they're BF because they get enough through your milk.

I am going to start vitamin D drops soon as it's cold here and we're definitely not outside anymore.

@brownie: Ditto to everything you said! Our pedi recommended vit-D drops at LO's 2 month appt, but I decided not to give them to her after reading up on it. We live in SoCal, too, and I get her outside for at least 30 mins each day for the recommended sun exposure. And I'm taking vit-D myself to pass it on to her through my milk.

actually just yesterday my pedi said around 4 months she would like my daughter to take the poly-vi-sol or w/e it is instead of just vit D.

I figure I have more time before I have to worry about it. My husband had gone to the store for us and grabbed the Di-Vi-Sol, but it smells so yucky I ordered the one Mrs. Bee recommended on the blog..waiting for it to get here!

Our ped never suggested a supplement besides vitamin D. I'm pretty sure baby gets all nutrients via breastmilk and formula (which I know formula has Iron in it) Any reason your ped suggested it?

No, we didn't give her anything. I do have the vitamin D drops, but was never religious about giving it to her. I do have her on probiotics right now for her digestive system, that's it. I make sure to eat a lot of iron rich food and offer her the same.

I didn't give my son any supplements. I wanted him tested for deficiencies first. I figured he didn't need too much if he was fine. It's a blanket recommendation typically. We just gave him iron rich foods and tool him out to the sun occasionally. Which wasn't hard living in SoCal. I could see that being more difficult in other places.

Did you give your baby any vitamin +mineral supplements aside from vitamin D? My pediatrician suggested that we switch to a multi vitamin with iron. SHe also mentioned that the iron if left on the gums can stain the teeth black so I should always clean LO's mouth after giving it to her. This worries me a little bit. Do kids really need this iron supplement? I really dont want her teeth to be stained.
