@Pumpkin Pie: Another European here and very accustomed to suppositories. Works really well for us.
Yes, take off the diaper, lift the legs a little and insert suppository as though you'd be taking the temp. Just make sure it is all the way in. And check that LO doesn't push it back out.

The fever is getting worse! I've never administered suppositories. Just lift her legs and insert?

She won't even let me put anything near her mouth, so I can't manage to even get broth in her. She is only taking sips of water.

@mamimami: Doc was referring to their use for constipation alone, so yes, just the digestive issues.

I've never heard about them being used to treat fever, I learned something today!

@looch: that has been our experience too. Suppositories are often given for babies instead of oral medications here, and they work faster.

I gave them to my son a few times, no problem. In Europe, they're the rule rather than the exception for pain relief.

@Autumnmama79: Your doctor's comments seem really weird to me. Why did he say suppositories should not be given? Or maybe he was saying suppositories should not be given for digestive issues? I have never heard that before. I think they're potentially better than oral meds which are full of colorants and sweeteners anyway. And they've definitely saved me some fever-related ER trips.

I don't have any experience with suppositories, but what about trying to give her chicken or beef broth with a little rice? Or a pouch? I'm really sorry your LO is so sick. It's really sad when they're suffering.

Suppositories for fever are amazingly effective. I would not blink about giving one to a child the age of yours! I gave them to my kids (with doctor's blessing) before age 1. The ones I have used are called Febrax and they are a combination of paracetamol and naproxen. They have knocked out fevers quickly that oral medicine couldn't touch. And no pooping in our case.

I've given one to my LO, but she was 5 at the time. I think I'd be a little nervous giving one to a baby that young.

She did poop right away but that didn't help with her fever, vomiting or virus... When we eventually did go to the ER after sustained fever for days, they doc there said suppositories should only be given if there is a history of constipation with the LO. If the constipation is a one-time kinda thing, stick to giving pedialyte, pears and other things to get things moving. Also try belly massage in a warm bath.

If she's refusing oral medicine or liquids, give them to her in a syringe or dropper.

The virus will pass soon enough!

My 15 month old has about a 102 fever, cough, runny nose. Took her to the doctor, and no ear infection. They just say its a virus and it just has to run its course.

She will not let me give her oral medicine, so I'm thinking of getting the suppository later when DH comes home. The pharmacy will be closed by the time I get there, so I'm hoping you can tell me what I need to know about using them. Will she poop? Does it work quickly?

She also hasn't eaten anything yesterday and today. She's had some milk, and a little yogurt, but thats about it. She refuses everything I offer her. Any ideas on what I can do? I tried offering sweet things like honey water, and even ginger ale, but it seems like she doesnt like sweets!
